Cricket and its fans have witnessed a lot of knocks which either made their team win the match or they didn&#8217;t, but still those knocks reside in the hearts of the fans and have legacies of their own. Some knocks just blew the minds of those who witnessed them.

Some knocks come when everybody expect the batsmen to score that day but some knocks come when the batsmen aren&#8217;t expected to score. These knocks are special because in these knocks, the batsmen surmount all the odds and score runs when they are not expected to.

It&#8217;s not necessary that the &#8216;unexpected&#8217; knock will always come in the favour of the team. Whether the knocks are great, which broke records, or are boring ones depend on the calibre of the player.  Following is the list of the unexpected knocks which came out of nowhere. No one saw it coming. They just came to bat and their scores were adjudged prior by the fans according to the potential of the player.

1. Sunil Gavaskar 36* (174) vs England at Lord&#8217;s, 1975

The stage was set, cricket was on the edge of witnessing the first ever Men&#8217;s World Cup to happen. The match was to be played between India and England at the Mecca of Cricket &#8216;Lord&#8217;s&#8217;. This time, it&#8217;s not the &#8216;old-school&#8217; five-day Test match rather it was a 60-over each side game. It meant that the batsmen needed to score as many runs as possible in the limited balls that they would get to face.

England won the toss and chose to bat. The openers took some time to settle but after 15 overs, they started smashing the Indian bowlers all over the park. Dennis Amiss started bashing nearly every bowler and ended up scoring 137 (147). A solid foundation laid by Amiss and Fletcher followed by the late blitz from Chris Old who scored 51* (30) took the team&#8217;s total to 334 and ensured that their bowlers had enough runs in the bank to defend.

India had to chase 335 in 60 overs (RRR 5.58). Indian openers Sunil Gavaskar and Ekanth Solkar were expected to score runs quickly but they looked clueless in front of the English bowlers. Solkar was soon caught out but Gavaskar on the other end was not able to even get out deliberately. Gavaskar either left or defended the ball. Messages were being sent to him to score quickly but Gavaskar was unwavering in defending that day.

For the whole 60 overs , Gavaskar either defended or left. Gavaskar ended up scoring a tedious 36* (174). When asked later, about why he was so lethargic to score runs, he replied &#8220;India had lost the game in the first innings itself, it would have been foolish for us to even try to chase the target, I played for the Net Run Rate&#8221;.

2. Stuart Broad 169* (297) vs Pakistan at Lord&#8217;s, 2010

It was the fourth test match of the five-match series (which later turned out to be four-Test match series only). England had won the first two Test matches and Pakistan had won the third. It was necessary for <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/jonathan-trott-named-englands-batting-coach-for-pakistan-test-series/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Pakistan</a> to win the fourth match to stay alive in the series.  England won the toss and elected to bat first but this decision soon turned out to be unfavorable for them as they lost seven wickets for just 102 runs.

Stuart Broad came into bat at No.9 and started endeavouring to get settled and build a partnership with Jonathan Trott. Out of nowhere, Broad started hitting some beautiful boundaries and scoring runs at a better strike rate than Trott. Pakistan&#8217;s bowling looked clueless as no one expected Broad to hit such therapeutic boundaries. Broad hit 17 fours and two huge sixes. As millennial say &#8216;Broad came out of syllabus that day&#8217;.

Broad and Trott struck a partnership of 332 runs and the damage was done by him before he fell prey to the spin of Saeed Ajmal. Broad was given out lbw at 169 (297). Trott also scored 184 (383). Because of their knocks, England&#8217;s score at the end of the innings was 446. England rattled Pakistan with their bowling and bowled them out for 74 in the second innings and 147 in the third innings (follow-on). England won the match comfortably by an innings and 225 runs. Broad was adjudged the Man of the Match for his heroics.

3. Jason Gillespie 201* (425) vs Bangladesh at Chittagong, 2006

It was the second match of the Australia-Bangladesh Test series in 2006. Australia had already won the first Test. Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bat first. They were bowled out for just 197 runs. Mathew Hayden and Phil Jaques came out to open. Hayden was caught out for 29 runs and as there were only 22 minutes left in the day. Ponting sent out his best blocker i.e 31-year-old Jason Gillespie as the night-watchman.

As what night watchmen are supposed to do, Jason didn&#8217;t lose his wicket on the first day and came out to bat on the second. Jason looked steadfast in his defense. He soon started hitting boundaries and it looked like that a proper No.3 batsman was playing at the crease. If someone was watching cricket on that day for the first time in his life, he would have perceived Gillespie as a proper batsman who has eight to nine hundreds to his name. But this wasn&#8217;t the case. No one expected Gillespie to score above 50 but he got to his hundred, then 150 and then finally double hundred out of nowhere.

He and Michael Hussey struck a 320-run partnership before Hussey got out after scoring 182 off just 203 balls. Ponting wanted to declare but Jason was in his 190s, So he let him achieve the milestone. Gillespie reached his double hundred and Ponting declared the innings. Before coming out to bat, Gillespie had only two fifties and zero hundreds in front of his name. The innings was declared at 581/4 and Australia won the Test match on fourth day itself by an innings and 80 runs. Gillespie was adjudged the Man of the match and Man of the series also. This match also turned out to be his last match.

4. Carlos Brathwatite 34* (10) at Kolkata, 2016

You remember the name, Right? For the sake of prelude, let me introduce you to the preface behind that match. It was the final of the T20 World Cup in 2016. The stage was set. England and the T20-giant West Indies had made it to the final. West Indies won the toss and elected to bowl first. Every English batsman was failing to score except Root. Throughout the 20 overs, England kept losing wickets at regular intervals. With the help of Root&#8217;s 54 (36) and a quick cameo by David Willey, England somehow managed to score 155 in 20 overs.

West Indies&#8217; openers soon fell prey to the golden arm of Joe Root. Within the span of 15 balls, West Indies&#8217; score was 11/3. England looked all set to win the final but Samuels and Bravo stood in between. They batted very slowly and West Indies lost six wickets for 107 after 15.3 overs , thus requiring 49 runs off 27 balls. England&#8217;s sharp bowling and Jordan&#8217;s yorkers let England score only 30 runs off 21 balls. Thus requiring 19 runs from the last over, everyone already presumed the trophy was going into ECB&#8217;s cabinet.

Morgan, the English Captain gave the ball to Ben Stokes who bowled the last over beautifully in their encounter against Sri Lanka. But nobody expected what they were about to witness. Carlos Brathwaite hit four sixes in a row and sealed the match and the World Cup Trophy. Brathwaite became the star of the night. No one ever would have expected from some bowling all-rounder who hadn&#8217;t made his name big will win the match for West Indies at that point of time when they were in no sight to win the match. 5. Ashton Agar 98* (101) vs England at Nottingham , 2013

It was already a big day for Agar as he was making his debut for Australia in the first Test match of the 2013 Ashes which took place in England. Agar was taken into the side ahead off the experienced off-spinner Nathan Lyon. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/crictracker/photos/a.601832999847425/3745581678805859" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">England</a> had won the toss and elected to bat first but they managed to make only 215. Australia&#8217;s first innings saw some similar bowling display or maybe better as they lost 9 wickets for just 117 runs with only having Phillip Hughes from the top.

Agar came into bat at No.11. He started to take on the English bowlers from the initial stage itself. He completed his 50 in just 50 balls. Australia were trailing by 98 runs before Agar came into bat. By the time he left , Australia had a lead of 65 runs. Everyone was startled as no one was used to see someone scoring 98 on debut at No.11 on a typical English pitch against the likes of Anderson, Broad and Swann. Right?

England scored 375 in their second innings and made Australia chase 311 in the last inning of the test match. This time, Agar was sent at No.8. Although he toiled to lead the Test match to a draw, even after his and Haddin&#8217;s efforts, Australia lost by a mere margin of 15 runs.  Australia lost the match but Agar&#8217;s knock of 98 was something which was not expected and these kind of knocks happen only once in a while.

When asked later, about why he was so lethargic to score runs, he replied &#8220;India had lost the game in the first innings itself, it would have been foolish for us to even try to chase the target, I played for the Net Run Rate&#8221;.
<h3>2. Stuart Broad 169* (297) vs Pakistan at Lord&#8217;s, 2010</h3>

It was the fourth test match of the five-match series (which later turned out to be four-Test match series only). England had won the first two Test matches and Pakistan had won the third. It was necessary for <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/jonathan-trott-named-englands-batting-coach-for-pakistan-test-series/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Pakistan</a> to win the fourth match to stay alive in the series.  England won the toss and elected to bat first but this decision soon turned out to be unfavorable for them as they lost seven wickets for just 102 runs. 
Stuart Broad came into bat at No.9 and started endeavouring to get settled and build a partnership with Jonathan Trott. Out of nowhere, Broad started hitting some beautiful boundaries and scoring runs at a better strike rate than Trott. Pakistan&#8217;s bowling looked clueless as no one expected Broad to hit such therapeutic boundaries. Broad hit 17 fours and two huge sixes. As millennial say &#8216;Broad came out of syllabus that day&#8217;.
Broad and Trott struck a partnership of 332 runs and the damage was done by him before he fell prey to the spin of Saeed Ajmal. Broad was given out lbw at 169 (297). Trott also scored 184 (383). Because of their knocks, England&#8217;s score at the end of the innings was 446. England rattled Pakistan with their bowling and bowled them out for 74 in the second innings and 147 in the third innings (follow-on). England won the match comfortably by an innings and 225 runs. Broad was adjudged the Man of the Match for his heroics.

<h3>3. Jason Gillespie 201* (425) vs Bangladesh at Chittagong, 2006</h3>

It was the second match of the Australia-Bangladesh Test series in 2006. Australia had already won the first Test. Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bat first. They were bowled out for just 197 runs. Mathew Hayden and Phil Jaques came out to open. Hayden was caught out for 29 runs and as there were only 22 minutes left in the day. Ponting sent out his best blocker i.e 31-year-old Jason Gillespie as the night-watchman.
As what night watchmen are supposed to do, Jason didn&#8217;t lose his wicket on the first day and came out to bat on the second. Jason looked steadfast in his defense. He soon started hitting boundaries and it looked like that a proper No.3 batsman was playing at the crease. If someone was watching cricket on that day for the first time in his life, he would have perceived Gillespie as a proper batsman who has eight to nine hundreds to his name. But this wasn&#8217;t the case. No one expected Gillespie to score above 50 but he got to his hundred, then 150 and then finally double hundred out of nowhere.
He and Michael Hussey struck a 320-run partnership before Hussey got out after scoring 182 off just 203 balls. Ponting wanted to declare but Jason was in his 190s, So he let him achieve the milestone. Gillespie reached his double hundred and Ponting declared the innings. Before coming out to bat, Gillespie had only two fifties and zero hundreds in front of his name. The innings was declared at 581/4 and Australia won the Test match on fourth day itself by an innings and 80 runs. Gillespie was adjudged the Man of the match and Man of the series also. This match also turned out to be his last match.

<h3>4. Carlos Brathwatite 34* (10) at Kolkata, 2016</h3>

You remember the name, Right? For the sake of prelude, let me introduce you to the preface behind that match. It was the final of the T20 World Cup in 2016. The stage was set. England and the T20-giant West Indies had made it to the final. West Indies won the toss and elected to bowl first. Every English batsman was failing to score except Root. Throughout the 20 overs, England kept losing wickets at regular intervals. With the help of Root&#8217;s 54 (36) and a quick cameo by David Willey, England somehow managed to score 155 in 20 overs.
West Indies&#8217; openers soon fell prey to the golden arm of Joe Root. Within the span of 15 balls, West Indies&#8217; score was 11/3. England looked all set to win the final but Samuels and Bravo stood in between. They batted very slowly and West Indies lost six wickets for 107 after 15.3 overs , thus requiring 49 runs off 27 balls. England&#8217;s sharp bowling and Jordan&#8217;s yorkers let England score only 30 runs off 21 balls. Thus requiring 19 runs from the last over, everyone already presumed the trophy was going into ECB&#8217;s cabinet.
Morgan, the English Captain gave the ball to Ben Stokes who bowled the last over beautifully in their encounter against Sri Lanka. But nobody expected what they were about to witness. Carlos Brathwaite hit four sixes in a row and sealed the match and the World Cup Trophy. Brathwaite became the star of the night. No one ever would have expected from some bowling all-rounder who hadn&#8217;t made his name big will win the match for West Indies at that point of time when they were in no sight to win the match. Brathwaite was adjudged the Man of the match for his stellar performance and since that day, everyone &#8216;remembers&#8217; his name.

<h3>5. Ashton Agar 98* (101) vs England at Nottingham , 2013</h3>

It was already a big day for Agar as he was making his debut for Australia in the first Test match of the 2013 Ashes which took place in England. Agar was taken into the side ahead off the experienced off-spinner Nathan Lyon. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/crictracker/photos/a.601832999847425/3745581678805859" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">England</a> had won the toss and elected to bat first but they managed to make only 215. Australia&#8217;s first innings saw some similar bowling display or maybe better as they lost 9 wickets for just 117 runs with only having Phillip Hughes from the top.
Agar came into bat at No.11. He started to take on the English bowlers from the initial stage itself. He completed his 50 in just 50 balls. Australia were trailing by 98 runs before Agar came into bat. By the time he left , Australia had a lead of 65 runs. Everyone was startled as no one was used to see someone scoring 98 on debut at No.11 on a typical English pitch against the likes of Anderson, Broad and Swann. Right?
England scored 375 in their second innings and made Australia chase 311 in the last inning of the test match. This time, Agar was sent at No.8. Although he toiled to lead the Test match to a draw, even after his and Haddin&#8217;s efforts, Australia lost by a mere margin of 15 runs.  Australia lost the match but Agar&#8217;s knock of 98 was something which was not expected and these kind of knocks happen only once in a while.
