Former Indian all-rounder Kapil Dev has also holds the joint record for hitting the fastest ton for India albeit his innings came earlier. He achieved this feat against Sri Lanka in Kanpur Test, 1986. Sri Lanka had earlier posted a total of 420 runs in the first innings.

In response, Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Mohammad Azharuddin hit hundreds for the hosts. Kapil reached hundred in only 74 balls scoring 163 runs off 165 balls. Azharuddin was unfortunately dismissed for 199 runs missing out a double century. India put up a total of 676/7 in 167.1 overs. 

This match ended up as a draw after only 2 innings could be completed in the Test. Sunil Gavaskar was awarded player of the match for his 302 balls 176-run knock.
