Top Five Run Getters in ODI 2014: In the game of cricket, it is the batsmen who attract more attention than the bowlers. They get applauded for each and every four and sixes that they hit which quite contradictory for a bowler otherwise. But, it is harsh to them as well; modern day cricket expects a batsman to score and score off any delivery that is put ahead of them. Like every year even 2014 was an eventful year for the willow holders. Bowler were plundered, thrashed and humbled around the world and the batsmen bundled on tons and tons of runs. So, here we are with the top five batsmen who had a great year and are the highest run getters in 2014. So far in the year 2014 Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara is the highest run getter followed by compatriot and skipper Angelo Mathews. He has also hit the most number of fifties in ODI’s in 2014 and also played the most number of games. Hashim Amla stands out in this feature with the most number of hundreds in 2014. Out of the top five batsmen nobody was dismissed on duck except India’s Virat Kohli who got out on duck once this year and Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara was dismissed on duck twice this year. 5. Hashim Amla (South Africa) 892 Hashim Amla made several ODI records his in the year and has justified his role as an opener and a world class batsman in the South African team. Calm and composed by nature, yet attacking in his batting approach Amla scored 892 run with his elegant stroke making and averaging 52.47 this year. He also broke the record of fastest player to reach 17 ODI Hundreds; he achieved the feat in just 98 ODI innings. Tillakaratne Dilshan 990 The Sri Lankan opener has all the ingredients to make the perfect recipe of an attacking opener. An array of shots, the love for width and the skill to pounce upon marginal error committed by the bowler. Dilshan throughout his career has been a bailer for Sri Lanka since Jayasuriya left the slot vacant, he has filled them with effort to an extent. 2014 as well proved to be a great year for him and the team as Dil scored 990 runs in 25 matches at an average of 41.25 which includes a century and 7 half-centuries. Virat Kohli (India) 1054 The Indian top order batsman Virat Kohli had a yet another impressive year as usual scoring runs throughout the year and broke many batting records. He scored a total of 1054 runs with a great strike rate of close to hundred. Kohli has a greater conversion rate in terms of centuries. He scored 5 half centuries out of which he converted four of them into hundreds. He also broke the 25 year old record held by the legendary Sir Vivian Richard by becoming the fastest player to reach 6000 runs in ODI cricket. Angelo Mathews (Sri Lanka) 1244 The leading run getter of 2014 is the Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Matthews who played 32 ODIs in the year and amassed 1244 runs at an amazing average of 62.20 overall. The Sri Lankan captain has been very successful this year scoring eight half century and one century batting in the middle order and also leading his side efficiently at the same time. He has not only performed with the bat but also has been their top bowler. Playing multiple roles of captain, batsman and bowler; full marks to Mathews for his performance. Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka) 1256 Kumar Sangakkara the old horse in the Sri Lankan lineup for the most part of his career has been the load bearer of the Sri Lankan team and still continues to do so. He has been one of the most consistent batsmen in the Sri Lankan team for so many years, and this year too he has performed consistently well for the team. In the year 2014 Sanga scored 1256 runs in ODI cricket at an average of 46.51. During which he also hit 4 centuries and eight half-centuries.
