Trent Boult sends Cheteshwar Pujara and Umesh Yadav’s timber for a leisurely walk

Trent Boult has produced a number of ripsnorters throughout his career, a reason why he has spearheaded the New Zealand pace attack. The 30-year-old is currently busy ruffling feathers in the Black Caps’ home Test series against India. In the opening Test at the Basin Reserve in Wellington, the left-hander picked five wickets, including a four-wicket haul in the second innings.

It helped the hosts thump the visitors by 10 wickets and then take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Boult has come in firing on all cylinders even in the second Test at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. In the first innings, Boult churned out the wickets of Mayank Agarwal and Mohammed Shami. But it’s in the second innings that he has managed to put his best foot forward.

Boult produces a couple of peaches

After getting bowled out for 235, the Kiwis conceded a mere lead of seven runs. With the match pretty much even stevens, the onus was on Boult to make the crucial breakthroughs. In his very first over, Boult accounted for Agarwal’s wicket for the second time in the match. However, the deliveries he bowled to Cheteshwar Pujara and Umesh Yadav seemed to have stood out.

At the fag end of the second day, he ripped apart Pujara’s poles. Boult bowled it full and the leather jagged back in prodigiously, leaving the batter bamboozled. The ball snuck through and cannoned on to the stumps. It was an important wicket since Pujara was in good form after coming off a half-century in the first innings. In the last over of the day, Boult had another corker up his sleeves.

After Pujara’s dismissal, Umesh Yadav came in as a night-watchman to join Hanuma Vihari in the middle. But Boult’s brilliance didn’t let him survive either. Umesh’s feet was glued to the crease and the ball snuck through between his bat and pad. Boult finished with a spell of 9-3-12-3.

Due to his spell, India finished the day with the score of 90 for six in 36 overs, most importantly with a lead of 97 runs. Boult will be looking to add to his wickets-tally and brush off the rest of the Indian batting lineup in the first session of the third day’s play.
