Trevor Bayliss signs with Sydney Thunder as head coach for upcoming three BBL seasons
Thunder managed a third-spot finish last BBL season.
World Cup-winning coach Trevor Bayliss is set to leave England as he returns to Australia to take charge of the upcoming three Twenty20 Big Bash League seasons. England men’s team went on to win the ICC ODI World Cup at the Lord’s in 2019 under the tutorship of Bayliss, while he has also had mentorship roles with Indian Premier League franchise Kolkata Knight Riders twice (2012-2015) and is currently with Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Having accomplished multiple roles as coach, Bayliss is set to join the Big Bash League franchise Sydney Thunder, the 2015-16 winners. Notably, Thunder have not qualified ever since and managed a third-spot finish last season.
Bayliss, who also coached New South Wales to Sheffield Shield and one-day titles between 2004 and 2007, will replace Shane Bond, who stepped down from the role for family reasons in April.
Hopefully, we can two steps further this summer: Trevor Bayliss
“It’s great to be home and involved in New South Wales cricket,” Bayliss said Thursday. “The Thunder have done well over the last few years. Hopefully, we can go one or two steps further this summer. To win as many matches as possible and compete in the final is my number one goal.”
Cricket NSW Head of Male Cricket, Michael Klinger, said Bayliss is a perfect fit for the role. “Cricket NSW are really excited to have Trevor Bayliss on board as the Head Coach of Sydney Thunder.”
“His experience as both an international and franchise T20 coach around the world is a great asset for the club and will be a fantastic resource for both the playing squad and coaching group.”
“Trevor will continue to shape the squad which will include selecting a new captain and with the addition of quality overseas players. He is from Western Sydney himself, so not only is he a quality coach and person but he comes from the heartland of the Sydney Thunder,” he added.
Bayliss has led KKR to two IPL triumphs, while he also won the Big Bash League with Sydney Sixers in 2011-12. Under him, England defeated Australia in the Ashes 3-2 in 2015, apart from becoming the T20 World Cup finalists in 2016. Bayliss has also been with Sri Lanka, who ended up as the runners-up of the 2011 ODI World Cup in his tenure.
