During Cricket Australia’s announcement on Friday (March 10), Trevor Hohns was appointed Australia’s full-time selection chairman, while a specialist role in charge of Twenty20 cricket was handed to Mark Waugh. Greg Chappell, the national talent manager, will have only a part-time selector role focussing on youth development for the Test and One-Day International sides and coach Darren Lehmann will continue as the coach.

Rod Marsh, the former chairman of selectors, put down his papers after Australia’s loss to South Africa in Hobart last. Trevor Hohns is contracted until February 2020, with Chappell and Waugh’s contracts ending in August of 2018.

CA’s chairman, David Peever opines that the panel comprised the “best possible candidates”. “Trevor, Greg and Mark all have a vast amount of experience, we are pleased with their performance in the role over recent months, and are satisfied that this new structure will allow the Panel to be well supported by our national talent pathway and talent identification systems,” he said.

He also confirmed the position of the head coach, and that he shall be involved in selection on all the three formats.

“The head coach will remain involved in selection on all three formats, but the other selectors will take on more focused roles, enabling a refined selection process and clearer lines of accountability within each of their respective roles.

Peever heaped praises on Trevor’s expertise as a selector, and hopes that he will execute his new duties to the best of his potentials.

“Trevor is highly experienced as a selector, and will ensure we place our best players on the field for both the Test and ODI formats, and help us strive towards our goal of returning to number one rankings,” he added. “Greg has been instrumental in restructuring our youth pathway program, driving the National Performance Squad, the introduction of a CA XI squad in the domestic one-day cup and creating clear pathways for talented youth in Australian cricket to aspire to wear the Baggy Green.
