Celebrations over England’s winning their maiden World Cup crown in the 50-over World Cup are still on. The Three Lions, who remained one of the top under-achievers in the ICC World Cup by finishing the finalists on three occasions, found themselves fourth time lucky when they beat New Zealand in a nail-biting final at Lord’s on July 14.

The match had ended in ties both after 100 overs and the super overs but Eoin Morgan’s side had the last laugh by the virtue of hitting more boundaries than those by Kane Williamson’s men. England were all out for 241 in reply to the Black Caps’ 241 for 8 after 50 overs.

Then, New Zealand scored 15 for 1 in response to England’s 15 for no loss in the super over but it all came down to the number of boundaries that the two opponents scored that defined the winners of the 12th World Cup. Not all were happy with the decision and the rules have now come under scrutiny. Even during the match, there were instances that saw the match tilting in favour of England controversially.

Nevertheless, it was England who eventually clinched the title while the Kiwis lost their second successive World Cup final after the 2015 edition. After the final, WWE Executive Vice President of Talent, Live Events and Creative, Triple H, promised to gift a customised WWE World Championship belt to the England cricket team.

‘A team of worthy champions’

“An incredible tournament, an awe-inspiring final, and a team of worthy champions. Congratulations to @EnglandCricket for winning the ICC Men’s @CricketWorldCup 2019! This custom @WWE Championship is YOURS!” Triple H, also a legend of the discipline, wrote on Twitter.

The England side received the special gift on Thursday and various members of the team posed with the same to acknowledge Triple H’s goodwill. England are currently playing Australia in an absorbing Ashes at home. While they failed to win the first match at Edgbaston, the second match was drawn before Ben Stokes, also the hero of the World Cup final, pulled off a miraculous victory for his side in the third Test at Leeds to level the series 1-1.

The crucial fourth Test of the series will kick-off at Old Trafford on September 4.
