'Trying to get Tendulkar's record of 100 tons' - Brad Hogg reacts to Virat Kohli's decision to step down as T20 captain

Virat Kohli recently announced that he would step down as India’s T20 captain post the upcoming T20 World Cup. This news came as a huge shock for the cricketing fraternity. Before everybody could get in terms with this, Kohli yet again came up with another announcement on Sunday that he will captain RCB for the last time in this season. This left his fans heartbroken as they came forward to express about the same.

Post these decisions by Kohli, the experts and cricket on-lookers are giving their opinions on it and the latest to join the list is former Australia spinner Brad Hogg. According to him, Virat wants to focus on the longer formats and that is the reason why he decided to give up India’s T20 and RCB’s captaincy. Hogg also reckoned that Kohli wants to break the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 100 international centuries.

“He has stepped down from the international position of T20 captain and also RCB. This is a bigger picture, where he is concentrating on the longer format of the game. He wants to lead India in Test cricket and ODIs. But there’s a record in his eye line as well – trying to get that Tendulkar record of 100 international hundreds,” Hogg said on his YouTube channel.

Kohli has been a pivotal aspect of Indian cricket for more than a decade now. He has 70 centuries under his belt across formats. He is close to equaling Tendulkar’s centuries in the ODI format, but in Tests, he still has a long path to walk. Hogg shed light on these numbers and pointed that Kohli wants to focus on Test match cricket and get close to Tendulkar’s record.

“He’s well up there with Sachin in ODIs, having got 43 hundreds at the present moment. But he has only got 27 hundreds in Tests. Tendulkar got 51 hundreds in 200 games. I think Kohli wants to concentrate on Test cricket and match Tendulkar’s record of having 50 Test hundreds under his belt. He wants to become one of the greats as well. I think that’s where Kohli’s going,” Hogg added.
