The 2019-20 edition of the Big Bash League (BBL) is starting to garner euphoria with pulsating Twenty20 action taking place across the length and breadth of Australia. After the curtain-raiser clash between Brisbane Heat and Sydney Thunder, it was time for Perth Scorchers to lock horns with the Sydney Sixers at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground. And, it turned out to be a damp squib, to say the least, as the Scorchers never really had any answers to the onslaught by an all-round and hugely dominant Sydney Sixers batting unit.
Batting first, the Scorchers got off to a worst possible start with Ben Dwarshuis [2-15] and Steve O’Keefe [1-29] accounting for both Liam Livingstone [0] and Cameron Bancroft for a 2-ball 1. Josh Inglis scored a 16-ball 22 before he was dismissed by Tom Curran [3-32]. Ashton Turner’s run-out courtesy Josh Phillipe/Ben Dwarshuis just summed up Scorchers’ horror day.
At 4-29, Perth Scorchers needed a partnership of substance to revive their fledgeling innings and skipper Mitchell Marsh [32 off 33 balls] and Cameron Green [36 off 32 balls] looked well on course of doing that. They stitched a 58-run-stand for the fifth wicket before Ben Manenti got rid of both of them to inflict a body blow to the Western Australia franchise. None of the lower-order batsmen could make any substantial contribution as they were eventually bowled out for 131 in 20 overs, with Tom Curran [3-32] polishing off the tail.
Imperious Josh Philippe spearheads Sydney Sixers’ successful run-chase
Chasing 132 was never going to be an issue for a power-packed Sydney Sixers line-up. And, it didn’t, as the opener, Josh Philippe ensured there were no hiccups to the run-chase as he scored a whirlwind 44-ball 81- an innings which included 11 fours and three sixes- leading the Sixers to a comprehensive eight-wicket win.
James Vince and Daniel Hughes didn’t do much as both of them got out to Chris Jordan who was the only wicket-taker for the Scorchers. However, that didn’t make any difference to Phillipe who kept on playing his shots to seal the chase in just 15 overs itself.
