Hashim Amla has been one of the greatest cricketers South Africa have ever produced. He made his international debut back in 2004 and has developed himself into a stalwart of their cricket. He has tasted success in all three formats of the sport- ODI, Tests, and T20Is. However, the recent times haven’t been joyful for the Natal-born cricketer by any stretch of the imagination.

The Proteas are currently playing a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka and have strained to find their feet. Amla also hasn’t been able to play to the best of his ability, having scored 34 runs in the three innings at a dismal average of 11.33. He has been dismissed by Dilruwan Perera on all three instances. In South Africa’s ongoing match in Colombo, Amla looked determined to score big.

Amla’s rough patch for South Africa

However, just when he seemed to get the measure of the conditions and the Lankan attack, Perera’s loopy delivery found the inside edge of the willow into the palms of Kusal Mendis. His wicket also triggered a collapse as the visiting team was bowled out for 124 runs, therefore conceding a lead of a humungous 214 runs. Amla’s form in the last seven months has dipped to a significant extent.

In his last ten Tests, the veteran has managed only 438 runs at an average of 24.33. He has scored three half-centuries in this period but hasn’t been able to convert any of them. His highest score of 82 came against India at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

Even in the ODI format, he hasn’t been able to come into his own having crawled to 154 runs in six matches at an average of 25.66. All of his matches were against India. Meanwhile, Twitterati showed their concerns over Amla’s dreadful run of form.
