Indian off-spinner Ravi Ashwin became the fastest bowler to reach 300 wickets in Test cricket on Monday. He achieved the milestone in the 54th Test match of his career and in the process went past Dennis Lillee who had managed it in just 56 Tests. The final wicket of the Sri Lankan innings also became the 300th scalp for the cricketer from Tamil Nadu. However, the celebration of reaching the milestone was coupled with the Indian victory as Twitterati hailed Ashwin for the feat.

The fourth day of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka started with the hosts needing nine wickets to wrap up an innings victory. The wickets started to tumble as Ravindra Jadeja and Ishant bowled beautifully to the batsmen who were unsure of their approach. Ravi Ashwin came late into the action but didn’t disappoint his fans and captain by taking quick wickets. He cleaned up the tail and fittingly scalped the last wicket of the opposition to script a memorable victory for India.

8-wicket haul for Ashwin

R Ashwin entered the second Test with eight wickets away from the milestone after not contributing with the wickets on a green wicket in Kolkata at Eden Gardens. But he came back strongly in Nagpur and bowled exceptionally well on the first-day wicket which had a tinge of green on it. He kept Lankan batsmen on tenterhooks and bamboozled them with his wily off-spin bowling. He ended the first innings with the figures of 4/67 and backed it up with 4/63 in the second innings.

Dasun Shanaka got the best ball of the match from Ashwin who was castled after the ball pitched on middle and leg and straightened to take the bails. He achieved the milestone with a bowled as well and picked eight wickets in the match. Twitter was delighted with his performance and congratulated the off-spinner for becoming the fastest ever to pick 300 wickets.

Here’s how Twitterati poured in their wishes for Ashwin:
