Twitter disappointed after Devdutt Padikkal and Ruturaj Gaikwad miss out from India's XI
The third ODI between Sri Lanka and India saw five players making their debut for India.
While everyone expected India to make few changes to the playing XI after already sealing the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in the last game itself, few expected that five players will get to don the Indian jersey for the first time. Rahul Chahar, Sanju Samson, Krishnappa Gowtham, Nitish Rana, and Chetan Sakariya got to make their ODI debuts.
While everyone seemed happy for the five debutants, two prominent names were missing from the list, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devdutt Padikkal. Many experts, critics, and fans expected these two promising young openers to make their debuts, but the elusive wait at least in ODI format continues for Gaikwad and Padikkal.
As soon as the fans saw the names of the duo missing from the squad, they flooded Twitter with sad faces and lines which prominently said, both players should have been given a chance in the third ODI. But all is not lost for Gaikwad and Padikkal, as they can still get to play in the three-match T20I series starting on Sunday (24 July).
Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devdutt Padikkal had great IPL season
It’s a well-documented fact that both the youngsters showed their immense potential by playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL). If Gaikwad scored three consecutive fifties for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the last year’s IPL and announced his arrival with a bang, then Padikkal too made heads turn for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by scoring over 400 runs in the 2020 IPL season.
The southpaw sizzled this year during the first half of the 14th edition IPL by scoring a century against Rajasthan Royals. That chanceless knock by Padikkal made the selectors take notice of the precocious talent.
On the other hand, Gaikwad too this year scored two half-centuries and formed a lethal opening combination with Faf du Plessis at the top for CSK. He also had a decent Vijay Hazare Trophy while leading Maharashtra in the 2021 season.
With back-to-back three T20Is lined up, Rahul Dravid head coach for the Sri Lanka tour, might be tempted to play these young openers ahead of the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021.
