Indian cricket team fans have been a spoiled bunch for a decade or so, ever since Mahendra Singh Dhoni took the reigns behind the stumps. With his presence of mind and brilliant keeping skills behind the stumps, Dhoni has taken innumerable batsmen with a flick of his hand. Still, to date, he is arguably the fastest in taking the bails off and dislodging the stumps during a stumping!

However, after his retirement from the longest format, it was Wriddhiman Saha, who took over the duties behind the stumps in the Whites and the Bengal superstar, in the ongoing 2nd Test between India and England, has shown just why he is the deserved heir to MS Dhoni with a Dhoni-esque dismissal of Haseeb Hameed.

Okay, so, here’s what happened. Joe Root, on strike to Ravindra Jadeja, clipped a ball through square leg. The English batsman ran the first one hard, calls for a second loudly from the non-striker’s end but then something happens. Jayant Yadav, on his debut, chases the ball, slides down, gathers it and releases it, all in a lightning speed; something Joe Root clearly didn’t expect!

So, what the English vice-captain does is, he bails out Hameed who is already halfway down the pitch.

This is where Saha comes into the picture as he collects the throw from Jayant in front and sort of back-flicks it onto the stumps with Hameed just short of his ground and Voila! What a dismissal!

If I didn’t know better, I’d bet it was Mahendra Singh Dhoni standing there in disguise but the fact that his successor is just as street smart and sensible behind the stumps can only mean well for the future of Indian Cricket.
