On the day-2 of the IPL Auction, Rajasthan Royals made a very interesting choice at the auction table. They brought the Karnataka off-spinner Krishnappa Gowtham for a whopping Rs 6.2 crores. Gowtham came into the auction at a base price of Rs 20 lakhs. He was sold 31 times his base price.

The 29-year-old spinner from Karnataka was sold in the ‘Uncapped Spinners’ category. There was a bidding war between the Rajasthan Royals and the Royal Challengers Bangalore to obtain him. Even the Mumbai Indians and the Kolkata Knight Riders seemed to be interested in him for a brief while. There were some serious discussions of the tables of both the teams and they were seen on phone calls as well.

Rajasthan Royals ends up with an added advantage

Having a bigger purse meant that Rajasthan Royals had a luxury of going hard at him. After a fierce bidding war, he finally ended up joining the Royals squad. Also, Gowtham can at times also be handy with the bat. He scored his maiden first-class century for the Karnataka team in the Ranji Trophy last year.

Gowtham also played in the IPL last year. Mumbai Indians brought him back then at the auction for Rs 2 crores. However, Gowtham didn’t get a chance to feature in the Mumbai playing eleven for the entire season last year. However, being in a squad full of superstars must have done a world of good to his confidence.

He was impressive in the Ranji trophy season too. The offie picked a 7-wicket haul in one of the innings. In that match, he also got to the 10-wicket haul mark after picking three wickets in the second innings.

The Rajasthan Royals were thrilled with the buy. They took it to Twitter to express their happiness and mentioned also mentioned Gowtham’s stats. They tweeted that the spinner has an economy rate of 7.06 and a massive strike rate of 160.

Here is how Twitter reacted to the buy:
