On 2nd October 2019, early in the morning, India was scheduled to play the first match of a three-match Test series against South Africa. There were several questions and doubts inside fans and critics over Rohit Sharma, who was up for his first match to play as an opener in Tests.

There was a split opinion among the former cricketers over India’s hitman for selecting him as an opener in this format. After he was added to the Test squad, he played a warm-up match against South Africa and got out on the second delivery of his inning which gave another chance to the critics to speak about him, but today Rohit gave a fitting reply to his critics with his willow.

Rohit Sharma looked pretty calm and normal from the starting and played decently well during the first session and then played the Proteas bowlers in all the directions of the ground. He got his half-century in 84 deliveries and then took only 69 balls to reach his 4th Test ton, This was his 1st century as an Indian opener. The dressing room cheered hitman’s century and his fans across the world took the twitter with the storm.

Before opting for Rohit, in Test cricket selectors had given ample chances to KL Rahul to perform but his poor form and inconsistency to convert good starts into big scores forced the selection of Mumbai batsman over Rahul. Twitter feels it’s the end of the road for KL Rahul in Test cricket

On the other hand, Mayank Agarwal also scored a brilliant fifty against South Africa. This was the 1st fifty of the Karnataka batsman against the visitors. Both the openers have given a solid start to Team India in the first Test of their home season. This is the first century-plus stand in Tests in 24 innings after Afghanistan Test in 2018 and also recorded the first 200 runs stand in 81 innings. Earlier it was done by Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan in 2015 against Bangladesh in Fatullah. Team India openers will resume their second day at 202/0.
