The third ODI between England and Australia was supposed to be a must-win encounter for Tim Paine and Co. More than that, it was a ‘test of character’ for them to arrest their slump and telecast their mettle as a cricketing nation. The newly appointed Aussie skipper won the toss and elected to field first and it turned to be equivalent to a nightmare as the English batsmen tore their bowlers apart.

A couple of years ago, at the Trent Bridge, Nottingham, England notched the highest ever ODI score off 444 runs versus Pakistan. Almost 22 months later, at the very venue, they pummeled Australia’s bowling lineup and breached the score in 45.3 overs. Alex Hales swatted Jhy Richardson over square leg for a six into the stands to accomplish the home team’s feat.

Records galore in Nottingham

The Barmy Army didn’t stop there and eventually plundered 481 runs in 50 overs, which will require some getting in the future. Johnny Bairstow and Hales scored a century each to leave the Men in Yellow in utter disarray. Paine’s troops gasped for breath, tried every tactic out to halt the carnage, but each of them faltered and the hosts kept peppering the boundary with sheer disparagement.

Skipper Eoin Morgan didn’t let the bowlers settle and notched the fastest ever half-century in 21 balls apart from becoming the leading run-scorer for England in ODIs. Australia used as many as eight bowlers, but none of them could stop the run-churning spree. Hales, playing in front of his home crowd, compiled his highest ODI score of 147 runs in a mere 92 balls.

Bairstow stitched together his fourth century in his last six matches and played till the 37th over to ensure that his team gets to a comfortable position. Jason Roy’s 61 ball 82-run can’t be undermined by any stretch of the imagination as it kick-started the innings. Following the home team’s domination over the hapless bunch of Aussies, Twitter is absolutely cock-a-hoop and praised the home team on the feat.
