The mother of all cricketing competitions, Australia vs India, finally resumed after six months, but this time in coloured clothing. The wounds of Steve Smith’s loss in March is still fresh as he takes on Virat Kohli’s side for a five-match ODI series and 3-match T20Is.
The Indian fans were expecting yet another run-fest especially looking at a number of runs scored in the 2013 seven-match ODI series where 350+ were being chased down at ease. Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first, looking at the dry nature of the pitch.
It soon turned out to be anti-climax for the home side as India were reduced for 11-3, with Rahane, Kohli and Pandey perishing without troubling the scorers much. Soon after stitching a decent partnership, Rohit Sharma and Kedar Jadhav joined their teammates in the pavilion.
Australian pacers Nathan Coulter-Nile and Pat Cummins extracted pace and bounce off the Chennai track, posing questions to the Indian batsmen outside the off stump. Coulter-Nile took three wickets in the process.
At 87-5, India saw a match-defining partnership between Hardik Pandya and MS Dhoni. The over which changed the course of the innings was the Zampa over which went for 24 runs. Pandya smacked three straight consecutive sixes in the process.
Hardik Pandya was dismissed later on 83 off just 66 balls at a strike rate of 125.7, smacking 5 boundaries and the same amount of sixes. He managed to send the ball to the roof of Chepauk twice in his innings.
After Pandya was dismissed, the master of finishing innings, MS Dhoni, showed who the boss is at the den of CSK, and yet again provided the necessary impetus in the innings along with Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Bhuvi, again, proved that he is handy with the bat at the number 8 position. Dhoni scored a priceless 88-ball 79 under pressure to take his team to a challenging score of 281.
