Evin Lewis had never gone past a score in excess of 150 in his entire professional career. After he was stretchered off the field in the 47th over, he had 176 runs against his name. Lewis hurt his ankle when he tried to swat a Jake Ball yorker but could only hit it back to his right ankle which caused him to retire hurt on the cusp of a probable maiden double hundred.
The innings wasn’t off to a perfect start as the visitors slipped to 33 for 3 in the 7th over after being put into bat by Eoin Morgan. Lewis played cautiously at the start of the innings and stitched a crucial 117-run partnership with vice-captain Jason Mohammad (46). After the fall of the No. 5 batsman, Jason Holder joined Lewis to take the march forward. What construed next left everyone stunned at The Oval in London.
It took just 94 balls for Lewis to complete his second ODI hundred and it was time for him to open his shoulders. When the last ball of the 39th over was bowled, West Indies had amassed 212 for 4 and were on the charge to achieve 300. This is when both batsmen started muscling the ball and Lewis’ consecutive sixes off Plunkett in the next over swung the momentum on their side. A total of 144 runs were collected in the last 11 overs which stunned the home side as they were struggling to figure out where to bowl to the duo.
Holder, too, got into his groove when he hit Moeen Ali for two sixes in the 42nd over. He compiled his 4th ODI fifty off just 47 balls. The pair added 168 runs in just 108 balls to inject serious momentum into the innings. The surge continued even after Lewis’ departure as young Rovman Powell slapped a 15-ball 28. Holder was dismissed on the final ball of the innings for a career-best 77 which came off only 62 balls. His knock included 4 fours and as many sixes. Lewis faced just 130 balls for his 176, an innings which was studded with 17 boundaries and 7 sixes.
West Indies finished at 356 for 5 which means that England will be chasing history as no team has ever chased more than 324 to win an ODI played in the UK.
