The most anticipated tournament of the year finally took off with the lung-screamer at Kennington Oval, London as the home team took on the dark horses of the tournament, Bangladesh. As it turned out, Bangladesh, after a watchful start, exploded in the middle with a massive partnership between Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim.
Before the start of the tournament, England were the firm favourites to clinch the trophy and Bangladesh surprised many by qualifying for the tournament. But not many are aware of the improvement this Asian side has made over the past couple of years.
These days, a team can only underestimate the Tigers only at their own peril. An exhibition of that fact was displayed today at the London as Mushfiqur Rahim and his men lit up entire Oval with their shot-making. Bangladesh was also one of the major reason for a turnaround in English cricket as they faced defeat against them in the ICC World Cup of 2015 and were knocked out of the tournament in a humiliating fashion.
After decent contributions from Soumya Sarkar and Imrul Kayes, Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim stitched an innings defining partnership of 166 runs in 151 balls and smashed the England bowlers to all parts of the ground with their onslaught with the bat. Tamim Iqbal brought up yet another ton in ODI with his innings of 128 runs of 142 balls. He smashed a whopping 12 boundaries and 3 sixes in his innings at a strike rate of 90.
The impetus in the innings was provided by their captain Mushfiqur Rahim and Sabbir Rahman down the order, which propelled their score towards a total of 305. Rahim scored a magnificent 72-ball 79 runs at a strike rate of almost 110, hitting eight boundaries in his innings.
Emerging star of Bangladesh in the batting department, Sabbir Rehman scored a valuable cameo of 24 runs at a strike rate of 160 to cause havoc in the English camp. England’s star-studded line up would be put to test against a formidable bowling line-up of Bangladesh.
Here is a look at how Twitter reacted to Bangladesh and Tamim’s innings:
Since WC 2015, Bangladesh won all the ODIs in which Tamim hit a six.
