India, before the start of the knockout match in the Women’s World Cup, was already under tremendous pressure as they faced the team which beat them convincingly in the round robin league. They were precariously placed at 101-3 as they lost the wicket of their quintessential batter Mithali Raj. It was Harmanpreet Kaur who saved the day for the Indians with her blitzkrieg with the bat.

Mithali Raj won the toss and elected to bat first and was instantly required to take guard after the wicket of Smriti Mandhana. India was reeling at 35-2 when Harmanpreet walked in to bat to play the innings of her life against Australia, which homes her franchise cricket endeavours. The name Harmanpreet Kaur holds a huge amount of respect in the Australian circuit as she is an integral part of the Sydney Thunder team in Women’s Big Bash League.

The people who did not have any idea about her hitting prowess would know by now, what Harmanpreet stands for in women’s cricket. She completely changed the tempo of the game after she was promoted up the order looking at her familiarity with the Australian side. She remained unbeaten on 171 off just 115 balls, smashing a mammoth 20 boundaries and seven sixes in her innings, as India posted a daunting total of 281 in front of a strong Australian side.

As a result, Twitter showed a great amount of admiration for the magical knock at Derby today. Many termed her as the Yuvraj Singh of Women’s cricket looking at her innings. This knock of 171* will be regarded as the best World Cup knock in the history of Indian cricket for a long long time.
