India had a horrendous time in the first game of the three-match T20I series against New Zealand. The team didn’t have Virat Kohli in their ranks and lost by a mammoth 80 runs at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington. Not only did they concede a 1-0 lead to the opposition, but also remained winless in T20Is in New Zealand. The day also turned out to be a horrible one for Khaleel Ahmed.
The left-arm seamer made his debut in the Asia Cup in the match against Hong Kong at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Then he wielded magic in the limited-overs series against the Windies. However, his T20I career hasn’t gotten off to the best of starts as he has only been able to pick up six wickets in as many games with a rather alarming economy rate of 8.65.
Khaleel Ahmed taken for runs
The 21-year-old was not up to the mark even in the opening T20I against the Black Caps and ended up leaking 48 runs in his quota of four overs. The pacer didn’t hit the right channels and subsequently, was taken to the cleaners, especially by the likes of Colin Munro and Kane Williamson. The left-handed Munro smacked him for a couple of fours and as many hits into the stands.
Even the Kiwis’ skipper Kane Williamson didn’t miss out on taking the youngster to the cleaners. In his second over, the Rajasthan-born gave away 16 runs and the over wouldn’t have done any good to Khaleel’s confidence by any stretch of the imagination. Even the lower order batters in the form of Mitchell Santner and Scott Kuggelejin smacked him for boundaries.
The Young Turk made amends somewhat with the wicket of opener Tim Seifert, who was looking to dash India’s hopes single-handedly with a knock of 84 runs from 43 deliveries with the help of seven boundaries and six hits over the ropes. In the meantime, Twitter is definitely not happy with Khaleel’s performance and the users on the social media platform lashed out at him.

Can someone tell me how this Khaleel Ahmed was picked for India? Bowlers in Shivaji park/Somas ground in T Nagar would bowl better than him.

Khaleel Ahmed and Siraj are given way too much chance. Not impressive at all.

Can’t win with Khaleel Ahmed in T20 and Vijay Shankar!!! No chance @ImRo45 @BCCI . Can’t chase the big target when there are no specialists bowlers and @imVkohli

Khaleel Ahmed looks like the bowlers of 90s. No pace, not much swing, no discipline over all.

"Khaleel Ahmed" should better start delivering. Shouldn't be the case like early days of Rohit Sharma, when he was given an extended run despite a series of bad scores until he became the player we know him today.
