Twitter lashes out at selectors for omitting Fawad Alam again

Fitness as a criterion in selection has been closely looked at in recent times but that too, cannot be a reason for his exclusion because the 31-year old takes his fitness seriously.

The exclusion of Fawad Alam from the 16-member squad for the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka which was announced on Sunday continues to baffle the cricketing world on Twitter. Interestingly, this is not the first time this year that he has been neglected. In May, he admitted that it was probably because of what goes on behind the scene and the persistent ‘liking’ and ‘disliking’ in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Alam’s claim made sense then and continues to be a valid argument even now because if the criteria for selection in the national team is performance then he makes a strong case. However, with him being denied the chance of representing his country again, Twitter is furious.

The numbers also suggest that there is definitely some other reason for why he was neglected during selection because his performance has been on the consistent side for some time now. In the last three years of first-class cricket, Haris Sohail with 0 matches, 0 runs was selected but Fawad with 2070 runs and an average of 59.14 was not selected.

Aamer Sohail is one of those who raised the question and emphasized that despite Alam’s ‘unorthodox technique’, the batsman remains a consistent performer in the domestic circuit, which should be enough for his selection. He criticized the selectors for their inability ‘to define roles for the batsmen and then select players accordingly.’

“Having someone like Fawad Alam in the middle-order will put the opposition in two minds and we know from experience that a left-hand-right-hand batting combination can work wonders. How they can utilize Fawad’s skills is therefore, something that the selectors have to ponder over,” he added.

Fitness as a criterion in selection has been closely looked at in recent times but that too, cannot be a reason for his exclusion because the 31-year-old takes his fitness seriously. In fact, he has often mentioned that as long as one is fit and performing, the eyes of selectors will also be on them.

His exclusion remains unjustified and quite unfair, resulting in a Twitter backlash, see it here:
