Twitter lauds Rohit Sharma for a superlative century against Australia in Sydney
Rohit looked a class apart among the Indian batsmen.
Rohit Sharma, the Indian batsman, was expected to play a pivotal role in the three-match ODI series against Australia. He may not have cemented his place in the Test team, but it’s a fact that he is one of the most dangerous players in the limited-overs format. He scored over 1000 runs in the format in 2018 and ended the year as the second-highest run-scorer after Indian captain Virat Kohli.
India are currently playing the first match of the series against Aaron Finch and Co and Rohit managed to show why he is regarded as one of the best in the business. After the hosts racked up 288 runs for the loss of five wickets in 50 overs, the 31-year-old had a massive task ahead of him to take the team off to a blistering start and he didn’t flatter to deceive by any stretch of the imagination.
Rohit scores his 22nd ODI century
During the run-chase, the hosts lost three early wickets in the form of Shikhar Dhawan, Kohli and Ambati Rayudu and found themselves in dire straits. However, the scenario didn’t fluster Rohit by any means. He put together a stand of 137 runs with the experienced MS Dhoni and brought India back into the contest. The Nagpur-born accomplished his half-century in 62 deliveries.
Jason Behrendroff got rid of Dhoni after the batter notched a gutsy half-century, but Rohit carried on in his own merry way. In the 40th over, he flicked Jhy Richardson on to the on-side to bring up his century in 110 balls with seven boundaries and four sixes. It was his 22nd century on ODI cricket. Moreover, he surpassed Ricky Ponting as the most century-maker in ODIs between Australia and India.
By the end of the 40th over, India needed a mammoth 109 runs in 60 balls. At one point in time, the Aussies were all over the visiting team, but Rohit brought all his experience into play and didn’t let Aaron Finch and Co run away with the match. Even as the other Indian batsmen found it tough to score, Rohit didn’t find it difficult to milk the bowling and get the occasional boundary.
