After enjoying a brief break, the Indian Test team has resumed their preparation for the upcoming five-match series against hosts England. On Tuesday (July 20), the visitors took the field against County Select XI for a three-day warm-up game. The practice match is taking place at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street. With regular skipper Virat Kohli and his deputy Ajinkya Rahane not participating in the game, Rohit Sharma was assigned the captaincy duties.

The 34-year-old opted to bat first after winning the toss, and numerous fans backed him to put up a big score. However, Rohit couldn’t rise to the occasion and walked back after scoring just nine runs off 33 balls. The veteran opener didn’t really look comfortable against the swinging red cherry as the ball went past the outside edge on multiple occasions.

Rohit Sharma couldn’t do much in the warm-up game

It was Lyndon James’s short delivery which got the key wicket in the 10th over. Rohit mistimed the pull shot, and Jack Carson completed a good catch. With Kohli and Rahane not in the XI, Rohit had extra responsibilities and many expected him to deliver. However, it couldn’t happen and fans were utterly disappointed. Soon, Twitter got flooded with criticism for the 34-year-old.

Meanwhile, Rohit had a decent outing in the high-voltage World Test Championship final against New Zealand last month. The Southampton track was favoring the bowlers but the opener showed his caliber in both innings and registered scores of 34 and 30. Although India lost the summit clash by eight wickets, Rohit’s performance gained appreciation.

Owing to the same, the ‘Hitman’ was expected to shine against uncapped bowlers in the warm-up game. However, he failed to put up a significant show, and fans vented their anger on social media. Nevertheless, India might be needed to bat once more in this game and Rohit would like to unleash his A-game.

It has to be noted that Shubman Gill, India’s first-choice opener alongside Rohit, has been ruled out of the series due to a leg injury. Hence, the Mumbai-born cricketer will have extra responsibilities on his shoulders. Nevertheless, the England bowling attack will feature veterans James Anderson and Stuart Broad. This means Rohit must gear up to embrace the toughest of challenges.

Meanwhile, here’s how netizens reacted after Rohit Sharma’s dismal show
