After the fall out in the first innings, things only went downhill for England on the third day of play in the first Test against Windies. The home team was at 127/6 at the close of play on day-2 and had a lead of 339 runs. It looked to be a great deal if they stretched that lead to at least 400. But, what turned out into reality was the complete opposite as skipper Jason Holder registered his maiden Test double century. He is the third player to hit a Test double ton batting at number eight
It was expected that the pitch will get even more difficult for batting after 8 wickets fell on day-1 followed by 18 on day-2. However, the track completely flattened out on the third day. Over 300 runs were scored and not even a single wicket fell. The highlight of the day was the partnership between Jason Holder and Shane Dowrich. These two added an unbeaten 295 runs together.
Jason Holder, Shane Dowrich – Take a bow!
Both Holder and Dowrich gave no chance to the bowlers by any stretch of the imagination. They were at their clinical best and played some of their personal best cricket in the last 12 months. They batted together for over 75 overs and were a brilliant act together.
Jason Holder was the aggressor in this partnership and never backed away from hitting the big shots. He scored an unbeaten 202 from 229 balls while Dowrich registered his third Test century. The wicket-keeper batsman didn’t take as many risks and stretched his score to 116 runs. Windies finished with 415/6 on the board and set England an extensive target of 628 runs.
The English openers Rory Burns and Keaton Jennings did well to negotiate the last 20 overs in the day. England ended the day at 56/0 and it’ll be interesting to see if they have enough resources to draw or win this game. Twitterati was mindblown with the efforts from Jason Holder and Shane Dowrich. They took their hats-off in praise of this duo.
Here is how Twitterati reacted:

Jason Holder's 229-ball 200 is the second fastest Test double-century against England after Nathan Astle's 153-ball effort in Christchurch. #WIvEng

So, Jason Holder's scored the first double century of 2019. Rohit Sharma to score the second one?

I did not expect to see Jason Holder to score a double century in my life time. What an effort.

Great to see the Windies dominating the test match against England. Has been said many a time before — the sport needs a strong West Indian team. The board needs to ensure that the best 11 start each match. More power to Jason Holder! #EngVsWI
