Delhi Capitals are back to winning ways and in some style beating the table toppers Kolkata Knight Riders by 44 runs in the 19th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL). It was their refreshing approach with the bat that came to the fore on the day as they smashed 215 runs in their 20 overs. And then the duo of Khaleel Ahmed and Kuldeep Yadav shared seven wickets between them to restrict KKR to just 171 runs.
Earlier, Delhi Capitals’ innings was divided in three parts. They got off to a brilliant start, with Prithvi Shaw and David Warner smashing the KKR bowlers left, right and centre. Shaw continued from where he left in the last game, reaching his second consecutive half-century as well. Warner, too, found his groove in his second game of the season, hitting some amazing strokes as well. The duo added 93 runs in less than nine overs and then Rishabh Pant came out to play his natural game.
The DC skipper took the attack to the opposition from the word go. He smashed 27 off just 14 balls with two fours and as many sixes to stitch 55 runs for the second wicket with Warner who also reached his first fifty of the season. DC’s score read 148 in the 13th over when Pant got out and seemed set for a score above 230.
But they could add only 28 runs in the next five overs to reach 176/5 with two overs to go in the innings. Even Warner was dismissed along with Lalit Yadav and Rovman Powell as KKR pulled things back smartly. One felt it will be tough for them to reach 200 but Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur had other ideas. They tore apart Umesh Yadav and Pat Cummins in the last two overs adding 39 runs and propelled DC to 215/5 in their 20 overs.
KKR never seemed to be in the steep chase
KKR needed a strong start to chase down such a mammoth total. But they lost Venkatesh Iyer for just 18 runs while Ajinkya Rahane couldn’t make the most of the lives he got. The man was given out off the first two balls of the innings only to be adjudged not-out via DRS and then he had edged one to the keeper off the third ball but none of the DC players appealed for the caught-behind dismissal.
At 38/2 in the 5th over, KKR were already behind. Shreyas Iyer then led from the front to revive the team’s innings and also took on the opposition bowling. Nitish Rana hit some lusty blows but couldn’t score more than 30. Once their partnership was broken, it was a procession. KKR’s batters couldn’t handle the pressure of the required run-rate as they kept playing shots and kept getting out.
Kuldeep Yadav was sensational with the ball for them as he scalped a crucial wicket of Shreyas Iyer first and then ran through the lower order, dismissing Cummins, Narine and Umesh Yadav in a single over. Andre Russell was in the middle but DC bowled well to him to keep him quiet. Khaleel Ahmed was also exceptional with the new ball as he also picked three wickets. Eventually, KKR were bundled out for just 171 runs in the final over of the innings to lose the game by 44 runs.

Khaleel Ahmed has been impressive too. Pace with control. How many left armers we have who could bowl 140 consistently??

Apart from those talented first timers in this ipl, the story for me is Kuldeep Yadav’s return. He is really good with his pace and spin variations. #DelhiCapitals

Kuldeep v Russell. And then Fizz v Russell. Next few overs are do-not-touch-the-remote-control. #IPL2022

Just look at where Iyer is standing at the non-striker’s end when Russell is on strike…that itself is intimidating 🙈 #IPL2022

Perfect match up for KKR here, Rana against Kuldeep and Axar can set the game up for Russell to finish it off. #KKRvsDC #IPL2022

Hopefully, the departure of the two openers will force Shreyas to be less adventurous. Too good a player to give away his wicket by playing cute/cheeky shots… #IPL2022

Ohhhh sugar… two in two. #ThankYouDRS

Death bowling is the only legit concern for #KKR. They have pretty much all the other bases covered. Now, the like of Rana, Rahane and Shreyas to fire. #IPL2022

A brilliant start by @davidwarner31 and @PrithviShaw and a fantastic finish by @imShard 💥 @DelhiCapitals post the highest 1st innings total in #IPL2022 @KKRiders has the potential to chase this, but it will require hell of an effort. Ki bolo Kolkata? Aamra korenebo ki? #KKRvDC

KKR have used Umesh well this season, they've finished him by 15th over max. Thus can't understand why they changed it today and used him at the death when Russell had overs remaining. Also why play Rasikh Salam if you're only going to give him 1 over? #KKRvDC #IPL2022
— Wasim Jaffer (@WasimJaffer14) April 10, 2022
That’s a good a set of 4 overs in T20 as you will see from Sunil Narine !! Fast outfield , Not huge boundaries & bowling on a Road .. 2 for 21 !!! as good as it gets … #IPL2022 @KKRiders

Only taken one game for Warner to slot into the #DC side & have an impact. Huge ⭐️ of the @IPL #KKRvDC #CricketTwitter
