The third match of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2020-21 witnessed action unfurl between the Melbourne Stars and Sydney Thunder at the Manuka Oval, Canberra. Winning the toss, Stars’ skipper Glenn Maxwell elected to bat first even though his team chased 126 against Brisbane Heat around 24 hours ago at the same venue.

Openers Marcus Stoinis and Andre Fletcher got the team to a steady start after the duo added 41 for the first wicket. However, Fletcher (12 from 10), was given LBW off Tanveer Sangha as he was looking to go leg side but missed it to be hit on the pads. Continuing his sensational form at No. 3, Glenn Maxwell (39 from 29) joined an easy-going and well-set Marcus Stoinis as the two briskly added, for the second wicket, 56 runs.

Maxwell and Stoinis shine

The Stoinis-Maxwell alliance was looking dangerous, however, Jonathan Cook got the breakthrough when Stoinis, who was at 61 from 37, in an attempt to go inside-out, failed to middle the ball and launched it straight to Daniel Sams at deep extra cover. Stars’ savior from the last game, Hilton Cartwright did not make his outing count as he top-edged a pull to Cook, off McAndrew, after scoring 9 from 8.

Much to his own and the team’s disappointment, Maxwell got trapped LBW of Green in the 15th over, when he would have started tee off. Small but needed contributions from Ben Dunk (16 from 12) and Nick Larkin (15 from 14) guided them to a respectable total of 169 for 8.

Thunder botch up the chase after a steady start

Coming for the chase, Sydney Thunder lost Usman Khwaja (7 from 7) early as Dilbar Hussain got him while the southpaw was trying to scoop him fine. That is when skipper Callum Ferguson and Alex Hales got involved in a momentum-changing 69-run alliance for the second wicket and played a slew of eye-catching strokes. Thunder looked approaching towards the chase promisingly until the two were in the middle, however, they were hindered when Alex Hales (46 from 41) was made to walk back after he holed a slog sweep straight to Cartwright at deep midwicket.

Ferguson, in the meanwhile, reached to his half-century, although he fell soon after, at 54, which included 6 fours and a solitary six, as he found Fletcher at covers of Hatcher. The third wicket led to a dramatic collapse as none amongst Alex Ross, Ben Cutting, and Daniel Sams could keep the hunt on. Being placed at 115 for 3, they deteriorated to 145 for 9 as Stars managed to clinch the game by 22 runs.
