It was certainly a competitive second day at the Seddon Park between New Zealand and England. Currently, both the sides are involved in the 2nd Test of the two-match series. In a must-win game for visitors, their bowlers helped them to get an edge over Kiwis at the starting but ended up getting on the backfoot because of their batsmen.

On Day 2, England started off with a great morning when their experienced pacer Stuart Broad dismissed Tom Latham (105) in the second over of the day. The hosts added only nine runs on the scoreboard when they suffered a major blow and lost the second wicket for the day as Henry Nicholls, who attempted a pull shot off Sam Curran and was caught by Broad at the fine leg.

England bowlers did a commendable job but their batsmen failed

BJ Watling, who played a marathon knock in the first Test and helped his side to win the game, came out to bat when his team was struggling at a score of 191 runs at a loss of five wickets. He replicated his good form in the second game as well and stitched a brilliant partnership of 133 runs with Darryl Mitchell (73).

Broad helped his side yet again and dismissed Watling on the penultimate ball of the last over before going into the tea break. The right-handed batsman anticipated the short-pitched delivery and played a strong cut, that got the leading edge of the bat and the ball sailed down into the safe hands of Joe Burns.

After that, the tailenders couldn’t add much to the team total and the hosts were dismissed at a score of 375 runs. Stuart Broad emerged as the best bowler for England, who registered good bowling figures of 28-7-73-4. He also got good support from the other bowling end as Chris Woakes also grabbed three wickets in the match.

A good show by England pacers on Day 2 offered their team a chance to get a strong grip onto the game but their top-order batsmen failed to impress. The visitors got to a poor start as opener Dominic Sibley could only add four runs in his tally before Tim Southee plumbed him out. After the first wicket, Joe Denly came out to bat at number three position. He added just four runs in his score log before Matt Henry brought his stay on the crease to a halt. However, at the end of Day 2, England was left struggling at a score of 39 runs with two early wickets.
