The Sri Lankan team hosted the Indian team for the second match of the three-match ODI series at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele. The visitors were in good form as they had continued their winning momentum from the T20Is to win the first ODI and take a 1-0 lead. Backed with a confidence-boosting win, the Women in Blue continued to dominate and sealed the series with a 10-wicket triumph.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s decision of bowling first worked in the team’s favour as Renuka Singh got the side off to a flying start. She picked three quick wickets and the hosts’ batting order came crashing down to 11/3 in 6.1 overs. Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu looked to sail for a long time, but even her plan failed as Meghna Singh picked her first.
Indian bowlers kept picking wickets at regular intervals and did not let the hosts any chance of scoring big. While Deepti Sharma ended with two wickets in her bag, thanks to wickets off successive balls in the final over of the innings, Thakur registered her ODI career-best figures of 4/28 as India restricted the hosts to 173/10 in 50 overs.
Anushka Sanjeewani, who was hoping to make a significant impact, lost her wicket cheaply after a clumsy run-out. Ama Kanchana remained unbeaten on 47*(83) but even that knock was not enough. India never looked back as they continued to take wickets as the hosts struggled to post a low score before being dished out off the ultimate delivery of the first innings.
Indian openers finish off the chase remaining unbeaten throughout
India were off to a terrific start, thanks to openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana’s power-hitting prowess. The Sri Lankan fielders provided the Indian openers with a few additional lives as the duo utilized every opportunity thrown at them. Bringing up a 50-run stand in the ninth over, the two scored some biggies and converted it into an unbeaten 100-run stand early in the 19th over.
The two were off to new heights as they registered their first-ever century partnership in the ODI format, and also registered India’s highest first-wicket partnership against Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan bowlers struggled to pick a single wicket as the duo finished off the chase remaining unbeaten, thereby providing their team with a brilliant 10-wicket win.
While Mandhana finished scoring an unbeaten 83-ball 94 runs, Verma added a run-a-ball unbeaten 71 to finish off the chase and win the series. This is also India’s first ODI series win since November 2019. The major win will boost their confidence while going into the third game to finish off the series with a 3-0 whitewash and add some crucial points to the ICC Championship points table.
Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitter reacted to India’s triumph:

An unbeaten Smriti Mandhana innings in an India win: gold. Usually is a good as a century. Her 83-ball 94* does feel like one today.
More Mandhana not-outs, please.#SLvIND
