The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had every chance of winning their maiden game of this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL). And they were in the driver’s seat for a chunk of the game against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. However, a storm by the name of Andre Russell came in their way and the Knights came out trumps by five wickets with five balls to spare.

Kohli and De Villiers take charge

The Challengers’ batsmen came out firing on all cylinders and scored 205 runs in their 20 overs. Virat Kohli and Parthiv Patel opened the batting and put on 64 runs for the opening wicket in 47 deliveries. Nitish Rana trapped Parthiv for 25 to give KKR their first breakthrough. Thereafter, Kohli and AB de Villiers carried on the good work and cobbled together a stand of 108 runs to put RCB in command.

Kohli scored his half-century in 31 balls and eventually went on to notch 84 runs in 49 balls with nine fours and two sixes. Kuldeep Yadav nipped out his prized wicket. At the other end, De Villiers clobbered a 32-ball 63 to take the sting out of the Knights’ batting lineup. Sunil Narine nipped out the batsman in the penultimate over. Marcus Stoinus chipped with a quick-fire knock of 28 runs from 13 deliveries.

Russell steps up yet again

KKR started the run-chase in a positive manner as Narine and Lynn added 28 runs for the first wicket. Navdeep Saini picked up Narine in the second over. Lynn strained in the first three games but looked like getting back into form with a knock of 43 from 31 with four fours and two sixes. Robin Uthappa didn’t go hammer and tongs but made sure that the scoreboard keeps ticking with a 25-ball 33.

Nitish Rana threatened with 37 from 23 and he was nipped out by Yuzvendra Chahal in a bid to force the issue. Dinesh Karthik also promised and he got out. Then came in Andre Russell and he changed the course of the game. In the last three overs, KKR needed 53 runs and Russell bludgeoned to 48 from 13 balls and decimated the RCB attack. He demolished seven sixes and one four to take KKR home.
