Twitter Reactions: Australia gain firm hold of the Test match before rain plays spoilsport on Day 4
With tomorrow being the last day, it will be England’s last bid to save the game and the Ashes as well.
In a day that was cut short due to rain, Australia continued to dominate their authority over the Englishmen. It was hard to believe that a team which was 368/4 on Day 2 at one stage now stares at an innings defeat just a couple of days later.
Earlier in the day, Australia resumed from their overnight score. Mitchell Marsh who played the innings of his life was dismissed without adding a run to his tally of 181. A few overs later, England produced an absolute miracle in the midst.
They finally managed to put an end to Steve Smith’s marathon innings. Getting out for the career-best score of 239, the WACA gave him a standing ovation as he walked back to the pavilion. Mitchell Starc was also dismissed cheaply as Australia were reduced to 561/7.
However, if you thought that was the end for the hosts, it wasn’t to be. The duo of Tim Paine and Pat Cummins added a stupendous partnership of 93 runs for the eighth wicket. Australia declared their innings at 662/9 after having taken a lead of 259 runs.
England, on the other hand, lost their first wicket in the form of Mark Stoneman. Josh Hazlewood struck in his first over. Alastair Cook’s drought continued as he too ended up being Hazlewood’s dismissal. A lot was expected from skipper Joe Root as England were in a spot of bother.
Nathan Lyon made sure Root didn’t stay long to cause problems for them. James Vince was the only English batsman who displayed some significant innings with the bat. However, Mitchell Starc bowled him with a gem of a delivery. England were 132/4, still trailing by 127 tuns before rain played spoilsport.
The umpires called for stumps on Day 4 after rain refused to stop. With tomorrow being the last day, it will be England’s last bid to save the game and the Ashes as well. As for Australia, they have a formidable chance to regain the urn with two matches still left.
