There was excitement and there was anticipation about the first day-night Test to be played in Asia and Pakistan’s 400th Test. But when Pakistan and West Indies took field at the Dubai International Stadium to see how things pan out with the pink ball not many heads could be spotted in the stands. The players were greeted with empty seats and those watching on the TV were disappointed as well since there was no real action in the first hour of play. Both the Pakistan openers Azhar Ali and Sami Aslam batted with patience and saw through the initial charge.
They decided to wait for the steam to run out of the West Indian pacers and then switch gears. They went into tea at 81/0 in 27 overs. The approach was pretty similar in the second session as well and both the batsmen batted pretty calmly. Windies bowlers, on the other hand, weren’t enforcing enough to force them to make mistakes and when they did there were not enough close in fielders to grab them.
Azhar got into his grooves and played some beautiful drives while the short balls from the West Indian pacers were cut through. He hit a few uppish shots but was fortunate to not hit them to the fielders. At Dinner the score read 172/0 with Azhar Ali batting on 89 his partner Sami Aslam was standing at the other end having scored 75 runs.
Soon after the second break the right-hander created history by becoming the first ever batsman to score a century in day-night Test match. He took 184 balls to get there while the innings was furnished with 10 boundaries. Pakistan were off to a great start in the Test and they are all set to score a huge first innings total on the board that will not require them to bat again.
Azhar concentrated harder after the century and is well on course of scoring a 150 but towards the end of the day, he lost his partner Sami Aslam who was clean bowled by all-rounder Roston Chase having scored 90 runs. Aslam missed a great chance of scoring a century.
