The Karachi Kings might’ve started on a slow note, but with two wins on the trot, they now are eyeing for a dramatic comeback in the tournament. They’ve always had the side to go the distance and it was always going to be a matter of time before they sprung in a few big results. Their latest win saw them escalate to the third position on the table.
Mohammad Amir got the side off to a blistering start, knocking off Tom Banton early off the very first ball of the game. He then got the better off Haider Ali, whose stumps went for a toss. Aamer Yamin then got the prized scalp of Kamran Akmal to set the tone for the innings and Zalmi were reduced to 10/3 inside 4 overs.
At this crucial juncture, they got a big knock coming from a big player. Shoaib Malik steadied things up alongside Liam Livingstone as the duo played some cautious cricket. They stitched 47 runs in 35 deliveries but the latter lost his composure in an attempt to up the ante. Lewis Gregory then made his presence felt with a 22-ball 25, which helped Malik complete his half-century.
Although the scoring rate did go up with Malik hitting some boundaries, Chris Jordan and Mohammad Amir exhibited brilliant death bowling to deny them a score in excess of 160. Amir returned with figures of 4/25 as the Zalmi registered 151 runs for the loss of 8 wickets.
Azam and Hales carry the Kings over the line
Sharjeel Khan was a victim of a brilliant delivery from Hasan Ali in the very first over, but Babar Azam and Alex Hales ensured there wasn’t much fuss about the chase. Scores around 150 can get tricky while chasing, with the batting team a little confused about what approach to take. Yet, Azam and Hales seemed pretty clear with what they wanted to do.
The duo played some delightful shots early on during the powerplay, thumping 18 runs off Hasan Ali’s second over. They managed to score more than 8 runs each over without taking much risk up until their partnership came to an end in the 12th over. Yasir Shah provided the much-needed breakthrough for the Kings, dismissing Alex Hales after he thumped a 27-ball 49.
Yasir Shah picked up another wicket in that over, but it was all too late as the Kings were already past the 100-run mark. They didn’t have to do anything extravagant to see through the run-chase, which is what Chadwick Walton and Babar Azam did. Azam completed his half-century and despite losing Walton right towards the end, he completed the game with a boundary towards backward point.
