Twitter Reactions: Bangladesh huff and puff after Mominul ton
From 222/3, Bangladesh were reduced to 235/7 in a space of 26 balls.
Bangladesh have beaten Windies a couple of times in Test cricket, but they haven’t done so at home. However, bearing in mind their current form, the hosts went into the opening Test at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong as favourites. At the end of the first day’s play, the Tigers would be reasonably happy as they ended on 315 for the loss of eight wickets in 88 overs.
Mominul takes charge
Bangladesh won the toss and had no hesitation to bat first. Soumya Sarkar, who replaced Liton Das, opened the batting with Imrul Kayes but flattered to deceive. Kemar Roach got rid of him for a two-ball duck in the very first over. However, Kayes and Mominul Haque put their heads down to build a useful partnership of 104 runs after which spinner Jomel Warrican dismissed Kayes for 44.
Mohammad Mithun, after looking determined, was nipped out by leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo. All-round cricketer Shakib Al Hasan, who made his comeback after the finger surgeries, buckled down to stitch a stand of 69 runs with Mominul. In the meantime, the left-handed Mominul notched his eighth Test century as Bangladesh went into the tea break being in a commanding position.
Tigers implode
The Windies made a strong comeback in the final session by picking up quick wickets. Soon after the break, Gabriel got the better of Mominul after the batsman scored 120 from 167 balls with 10 boundaries and a six. In the same over, Mushfiqur Rahim became the pacer’s second victim. Gabriel castled Mahmudullah to pick up his third wicket and push the Tigers on the backfoot.
Shakib wasn’t ready to throw his wicket away, but Gabriel ran through his defense to castle the left-hander for 34 runs. From 222/3, Bangladesh were reduced to 235/7 in a space of 26 balls. Mehidy Hasan scored 22 runs with three fours to inject some momentum. In the end, Taijul Islam and debutant Naeem Hasan compiled a partnership of 56 runs to take their team over the 300-run mark.
