England started day 2 of the second Test against Bangladesh 3 wickets down with just 50 runs on the board; they were dealt another early blow by Mehedi Hasan as he got past Moeen Ali’s bat and cleaned him up with just 14 runs added to the team total. Ben Stokes was dismissed for a duck as Tajul Islam had him caught by Mominul Haque. There was a brief phase of resistance as Joe Root and Jony Bairstow got together a partnership but both the batsmen were on their way back before the Lunch break, Bairstow for 24 and Root for 56.
Bangladesh needed just another couple of wickets when they walked out in the second session and it looked like they will manage a certain lead in the inning. But that was not to be as the ninth wicket pair of Chris Woakes and Adil Rashid stitched together a 99-run partnership that not only got them past the deficit limit but also frustrated the Bangladeshi side that was on a roll.
Woakes having survived a controversial waist height no ball dismissal was eventually dismissed for 46 by Mehedi who had already registered a five-wicket haul the second of his two-match Test career. Steve Finn couldn’t stay at the crease for longer than 4 balls while Rashid was unbeaten at the other end with 44 to his name. They were bowled out for 224 and managed a slender lead of 24 runs.
Walking out to bat in the second inning, Bangladesh were off to a good start with both the openers starting off steadily. Centurion from the first inning Tamim Iqbal scored a 40 while Imrul Kayes having failed in the previous knock remained unbeaten on 59 at stumps on day 2. Kayes had Mahmudullah for company who is just three short of a half century.
They ended the day with 152 runs for the loss of 3 wickets and a lead of 128 runs. It is quite interestingly poised as both the teams have their share of opportunities to cash on and grab control of the day.
Here is how Twitter reacted during the second day’s play:
England will probably lose this test due to their inability to create pressure for sustained periods with the ball. #banvseng

#BanvsEng Both Mushfiqur Rahim & Mahmudullah have the tendency to be over aggressive at just the wrong time & throwing their wickets away

Mehedi Hasan is the 2nd offspinner to claim two 5-fors in their first-two Tests. Sonny Ramadhin – first one to do it. #banvseng #BANvENG
