Twitter Reactions: Bangladesh on the mat, but not out of gas
Taijul finished with 11 wickets in the match.
At the end of the second day of the first Test at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Zimbabwe, well and truly, had the upper hand. However, Bangladesh made a strong comeback and now require 295 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Most importantly, from the home team’s perspective, the Tigers have as many as a couple of days to knock of those runs.
Taijul shines with the leather
With a massive first-innings lead, Hamilton Masakadza and Brain Chari commenced proceedings. But Mehidy Hasan Miraz gave the hosts their first wicket with the wicket of Chari. Brendan Taylor looked good after scoring 24 at almost a run-a-ball. Unfortunately, he was nipped out by Taijul Islam. Masakadza and Sean Williams out their heads down thereafter.
The duo put on 54 runs for the fourth wicket and was separated by Mehidy as he got rid of Masakadza for 48 runs. Sikandar Raza played a breezy knock of 25 before being castled by Taijul. In the very next delivery, Peter Moor fell prey to the left-armer Taijul. A couple of overs later, the tweaker picked up his fourth wicket by cleaning by the right-handed Raza with a peach.
Liton and Kayes see Bangladesh through
Regis Chakabva and Wellington Masakadza added 35 more runs and in their stand, they didn’t play many extravagant strokes. Mehidy pinned Masakadza in front to break a stand, which frustrated the Tigers for almost 20 overs. Chakabza was the next match to be dismissed and he became Nazmul Islam Apu’s first wicket after which the spinner got rid of Mavuta.
Tendai Chatara was the last wicket to fall and Taijul finished with a six-wicket haul after his six-fer in the first innings. With a massive target of 321 ahead of the hosts, Liton Das and Imrul Kayes opened the batting. In the dying stages of the day, there was a huge appeal against Liton, but he survived. Eventually, Bangladesh ended the day with 26 on the board.
