The first Test in Sylhet turned out to be a nightmare for Bangladesh as they slumped to a massive defeat against Zimbabwe and also lost their chance of winning the series. However, the Tigers have come out all guns blazing in the second match at Sher-E-Bangla Stadium in Dhaka as they ended the first day with the score at 303/5 in the 90 overs after struggling in the initial phase of the day.

Mominul and Mushfiqur steady the ship

The hosts won the toss and didn’t have any hesitation to bat first, but they got off to a shambolic start as Kyle Jarvis and Tendai Chatara ran through the top order. Liton Das, Imrul Kayes and Mohammad Mithun couldn’t breach the double-figure mark as Bangladesh were reduced to 26/3 in the 12th over. The onus was thereafter on Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim.

Both bucked down to take their team through to Lunch, having played out 14 more overs. The second session turned out to be a productive one for them as they raced to their respective half-centuries. Mominul went on to score his seventh Test century even as Mushfiqur, at the other end, kept frustrating the Zimbabwean bowlers. At Tea, the home team were at 207/3.

Visitors strike late in the day

The duo carried on with their good work even in the last season. Even Mushfiqur accomplished his ton as they threatened to run away with the match. Just when it seemed that they would end the day without any further hiccup, Chatara got rid of Mominul, who eventually scored 161 runs from 247 balls with 19 fours. The stand fetched 266 runs and bailed the Tigers out.

After his dismissal, Taijul Islam was sent as the nightwatchman and he was removed by Jarvis. The Zimbabweans resorted to taking the Decision Review System (DRS) after which the left-hander was adjudged caught-behind. Skipper Mahmudullah came out and didn’t have to play a delivery as Mushfiqur staved off Chatara in the final over to remain not out on 111 from 231 balls.
