Twitter Reactions: Bangladesh spinners strangle Windies after Mahmudullah ton
The hosts are well and truly in a commanding position.
After the opening day of their second Test against Windies at Sher-E-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, Bangladesh were the happier team having scored 259 runs with five wickets in hand. The Tigers didn’t let complacency sneak in and dominated the second day as well. On the contrary, the Caribbean team is in all sorts of trouble and is currently trailing by a massive 433 runs.
Mahmudullah makes hay
Shakib Al Hasan and Mahmudullah were the overnight batsmen and they carried on with the good work. They added 111 for the sixth wicket after which Kemar Roach dismissed Shakib, who scored 80 runs from 139 balls with the help of six boundaries. Liton Das batted in the lower middle order and joined Mahmudullah in the middle. The duo added 92 priceless runs.
Liton played a whirlwind knock of 54 runs from 62 balls before being castled by part-timer and Windies stand-in skipper Kraigg Brathwaite. Mehidy Hasan Miraz tried to provide some resistance and was dismissed by Jomel Warrican. At the other end, Mahmudullah racked up his third Test ton and eventually ended on 136 runs from 242 balls to help Bangladesh amass 508 runs.
Windies capitulate
Windies got off to a horrendous start as both Kraigg Brathwaite and Kieran Powell perished for single-digit scores. While Shakib accounted for Brathwaite’s wicket, Mehidy Hasan nipped out Powell. Shakib picked up his second wicket in the form of Sunil Ambris. Thereafter, Mehidy got rid of Roston Chase and Shai Hope, and reduced the visiting team to 29/5 in a mere 12 overs.
However, Shimron Hetmyer and Shane Dowrich played out the remaining 12 overs without any further hiccup. Hetymer trod the attacking route in the opening Test in Chittagong and he didn’t change his approach even in Dhaka. The left-hander scored 32 runs from 43 balls and Dowrich ensured that he didn’t throw his wicket away to a rash stroke. Windies ended the day on 75/5.
