The game between the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants and the Tshwane Spartans was one hell of an entertainer. Fortunes kept swinging between both the teams as if it were playing musical chairs. The atmosphere at St George’s Park was absolutely electric. And much to the delight of the local crowd, it was the home team that managed to pull off a steep chase. Ben Dunk rode his luck throughout his innings but what mattered, in the end, was his unbeaten 99 which helped his team get over the line.

The Tshwane Spartans opted to bat first in this encounter. The top-order played well once again in this game. While Tony de Zorzi scored 30 off 22 balls, Wiaan Mulder mustered 52 runs in 41 balls. AB de Villiers, however, was the star with the willow. He continued with his brilliant form in the tournament and this time scored 63 runs from 38 deliveries. The lower-order tried to score some quick runs and thus the Spartans managed to put up 188/5 on board in 20 overs. Imran Tahir picked up two wickets in his four overs.

Ben Dunk dropped twice in a rollercoaster of a chase

The Nelson Mandela Bay Giants were put on the backfoot immediately in the chase. Corbin Bosch struck first by picking up the wicket of Matthew Breetzke. Then, Lungi Ngidi picked up another two wickets. He dismissed JJ Smuts and Heino Kuhn for 7 and 0 runs respectively. As a result, the Giants were down to 28/3 and seemed to be in all sorts of trouble. But, Ben Dunk built a good partnership along with Ryan ten Doeschate. The wicket-keeper batsman was very lucky in this innings.

Two easy catches were dropped and some tough chances were let off. Several hits which went up in the air fell in no man’s land. At the other end, Ryan ten Doeschate played the second fiddle and scored 33 from 27 balls. Towards the end of the chase, Ben Dunk had an opportunity to get to his hundred.

But he failed to score a couple of runs in the final over of the innings and remained unbeaten on 99 from 54 balls. Marco Marias played really well and scored 38 from 22 balls as the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants won by 6 wickets.
