A half-century from Mitchell Marsh and some late acceleration from Cameron Bancroft guided the Perth Scorchers to 152 for 5 in the 12th encounter of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2020-21. After being put in to bat, the Scorchers struggled to gain momentum. Sedately adding 23 runs in the first four overs, Josh Inglis flicked one straight to deep midwicket to give Nathan McAndrew his first and only breakthrough.

On the last delivery of the same over, Joe Clarke perished for a duck after he ran himself out to leave his side reeling at 24 for 2. Unlike Clarke, Colin Munro got himself a start but fell to Ben Cutting in the 7th over, courtesy of a marvelous relay catch between Usman Khwaja and Adam Milne.

As wickets continued to tumble from another end, adding 37 with Ashton Turner and 61 with Bancroft for the 4th and 6th wicket respectively, Mitchell Marsh stood for his team and played sensibly to notch up his half-century. 91 for 5 after Daniel Sams got Turner (23 from 14) caught at point, the Scorchers looked in deep trouble. However, the crucial 6th wicket alliance between Marsh (52 from 41) and Bancroft (34 from 26) meant that Scorchers’ bowlers had at least a total to bowl at.

A cakewalk-chase for Thunder

Having given under 7 runs-an-over-target to chase, Ashton Turner and Co needed early wickets to thwart the Thunder. They did manage to strike early as Jason Behrendorff cleaned up the dangerous Alex Hales for a golden duck in the very first over of Thunder’s response. Tapping the scoring rate for a few overs that followed, the Scorchers got another crucial breakthrough when Usman Khwaja (21 from 25), who was unable to shift gears, top-edged one, off Aaron Hardie to midwicket.

That is when skipper Callum Fergusson joined Oliver Davies to stitch a match-winning 75-run stand for the third wicket. Despite the loss of momentum, the Thunder ensured to stay ahead of their opponents at the halfway mark to claim the Bash Boost. Ferguson slammed 7 fours and a six in his unbeaten knock of 61, whereas he was well-assisted by Davies, who scored 36 from 22.

Though Fawad Ahmed broke the stand in the 14th over, as the leg-spinner lured Davies to get him stumped, the grip of Scorchers over the game by then was long gone. Ben Cutting, who stood unbeaten 25 from 15, walked in to complete the formalities as Thunder clinched the game by 7 wickets and 3 balls to spare.
