The Melbourne Renegades registered their second win on the trot, as they defeated Brisbane Heat in the final game of the Big Bash League (BBL) season seven before the Christmas break. The Heat batted firs butt, they were missing the firepower of their star Australian batsman Chris Lynn who continues to be out of action because of a shoulder injury. Renegades failed to perform in the first four seasons of the tournament but this looks like a different side altogether.
Brisbane Heat started slowly losing their skipper in the second over of the game, Sam Heazlett and Jimmy Peirson followed soon after as the Heat were reduced to 30 for 3 in the first six overs on the back of some tight bowling by the front line pacers.
Mamus Labuschagne and Alex Ross tried to consolidate but the overs ticked by and the scoreboard did not. Jack Wildermuth bowled some rippers getting three wickets in his four overs. Veteran spinner Brad Hogg and Carribean allrounder Dwayne Bravo also chipped in with two wickets each to keep them pinned all through the innings. Eventually, Brisbane Heat managed to conclude their innings on 132 courtesy Alex Ross’s 48.
Renegades had a similar start to the chase as they lost both their openers inside the powerplay, Shadab Khan surprised the batsmen with his variety after taking the new ball. Cameron White who played a match-winning knock in the previous game impressed the fans in this game as well scoring a 50 to keep his team in contention.
Along with the experienced White, Tom Cooper scored a scintillating half-century to help his team get over the line without much ado. Renegades won the match with 7 wickets in hand to register their second win in as many games.
Brisbane Heat will surely be disappointed with this performance but they have positives to take away from the game, Shadab Khan’s bowling is a huge point for Heat as they move along in the season.
Here is how the world of Twitter reacted during the course of the match:
