Twitter Reactions: Chase and Holder save the day for Windies
The Windies were reduced to 113/5 in the 39th over.
The Windies would be happy with how the first day’s play of their second Test against India in Hyderabad ended, especially after the poor start courtesy of wickets at regular intervals. Leading the way was Roston Chase, who scored 98 runs to help the visitors to 295/7 in 95 overs. Skipper Jason Holder’s gutsy half-century also helped their cause.
Kuldeep and Ashwin strangle the batsmen
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Kraigg Brathwaite and Kieran Powell got the visitors off to a steady start after which Ravichandran Ashwin broke the 32-run stand by getting rid of Powell for 22. Chinaman Kuldeep Yadav opened his account with the wicket of Brathwaite. Shai Hope threatened with a fluent 36 but was pinned by pacer Umesh Yadav.
Shimron Hetmyer and Sunil Ambris promised with a couple of boundaries and both fell prey to Kuldeep Yadav’s guile and trajectory. From a decent beginning, the Windies were reduced to 113/5 in the 39th over. The onus was thereafter on Roston Chase and wicketkeeper-batsman Shane Dowrich to arrest their team’s slump and they did so with a 69-run stand.
Holder and Chase carried on
The pitch was a decent one for batting and Jason Holder’s men would have been disappointed for how they began. Following Chase and Dowrich’s partnership, Holder joined the former and the duo added 104 runs in 183 deliveries. The captain, who missed the last match due to an ankle injury, scored a gutsy 52 from 92 balls with the help of six graceful boundaries.
Chase accomplished his second fifty of the series and is currently two runs short of notching his fourth Test century. Holder was dismissed by Umesh, who got his third wicket. The batsman was caught down the leg side by Rishabh Pant. Devendra Bishoo played 15 balls to ensure that the Windies don’t suffer any further hiccup in the closing stages of the day.
