The season opener of the 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) got underway with two heavyweights locking horns in Mumbai. Defending champions Mumbai Indians locked horns with the Chennai Super Kings in the marquee clash. The Super Kings arrived in to the game boasting of a camp full of experienced cricketers. And as things panned out on the day, the experience did count a great deal.

However, things were not on the happy note for CSK for the major part of the run chase. They were certainly undone by a rookie MI bowler, Mayank Markande. Two timely wickets in the middle overs from Markande put the brakes on the CSK runchase. The young leggie dismissed Ambati Rayudu and MS Dhoni in quick succession to put MI in firm command of the game. With the big names back in the dug out, it was only going to get tougher for the visitors in the match.

But Dwayne Bravo had other plans. He smashed a quick 68 off just 30 deliveries with 3 fours and 7 sixes to put Chennai Super Kings on top. Needing 7 off the last over and a wicket to spare, it was Kedar Jadhav who helped CSK cross the line with a six and a four to finish the match.

Earlier in the game, it was MS Dhoni who had won the toss and had opted to bowl first. The move seemed to be a perfect one with Shane Watson and Deepak Chahar bowling exceedingly well in the powerplay. They accounted for the dismissals of both the Mumbai Indians openers. The young duo of Ishan Kishan and Surya Kumar Yadav then added 78 for the third wicket to bring the MI camp back in the contest.

Following their dismissal, the Pandya brothers took control of the game. While Hardik struggled for his 22 (20), Krunal Pandya was sensational for his unbeaten 22-ball 41. Their efforts helped the Mumbai Indians finish with 165/4 in the stipulated 20 overs. In the run chase, Chennai Super Kings got off to a decent start before Hardik dismissed Shane Watson on 16. Ambati Rayudu also looked good for his 22 but the middle-order collapse was too tough to recover from.

In the end, it was only a one man show. Bravo singlehandedly took CSK close to the target. He was unfortunate to have not finished the game for his side. Chennai Super Kings beat the Mumbai Indians by 1 wicket.
