Twitter Reactions: Clincical England thrash Bangladesh to confirm semi-final berth in Women's World Cup 2022
England have sealed a spot in the semi-finals with the win over Bangladesh.
England have continued their unbeaten run, winning their fourth game in a row in the Women’s World Cup 2022, and have made it to the third position on the points table to seal a spot in the semi-finals by recording a 100-run triumph over Bangladesh in their last league-stage game. Bangladesh, on the other hand, did look good in patches with their bowling efforts, but could not string together a complete performance.
Earlier in the day, England won the toss and chose to bat at the Basin Reserve in Wellington. Danielle Wyatt could not contribute much at the top, while Heather Knight was dismissed cheaply as well with the side reeling at 26/2. However, Tammy Beaumont and Nat Sciver strung together an important partnership of 60 runs for the third wicket, but both the batters were soon dismissed at the 26th over mark.
Amy Jones and Sophie Dunkley laid the foundation for a good total to be posted with a partnership of 72 runs for the fifth wicket until Jones perished for 31. Dunkley, on the other hand, crossed the half-century mark and top-scored for her side with an 82-ball 67. However, it was the cameo from Katherine Brunt (22*) and Sophie Ecclestone (17*) towards the end that got the defending champions to a decent score of 234 for 6 in 50 overs.
Sophie Ecclestone continues her excellent bowling form
In reply, the Bangladesh openers, Shamima Sultana and Sharmin Akhter, got off to a good start with 42 on the board for no loss despite taking a lot of time initially. Ecclestone came into the attack and dismissed the openers in quick time as Bangladesh started to lose wickets at regular intervals after a good opening stand. Nigar Sultana and Lata Mondal made some valuable contributions in the middle but none of the other batters got going.
Charlotte Dean and Ecclestone both picked up three wickets apiece to dent the Bangladesh batting order as the Bangla Tigers fell short by 100 runs in the end. With the win, England have progressed to the semi-finals while Bangladesh have ended their campaign with just one win in the tournament.
