Team India has created history by winning the first Test of a series in Australia for the first time in history. They needed six wickets to win on the final day and with 219 runs in the bank, the visitors were always the favourites to take an early lead in the series. But Australia’s never give up attitude stretched the game a lot which kept India on the tenterhooks. However, their lower-order couldn’t deny the inevitable as India won the game by 31 runs in the end.

Shaun Marsh and Travis Head, the overnight batsmen, had the responsibility to spend time in the middle. But Ishant Sharma delivered a snorter of a delivery to send back the latter to make the score 115/5. Then began the famous rearguard action from the Aussies with their gritty skipper Tim Paine in the middle even as Marsh also looked solid. The left-hander crossed the 50-run mark to a resounding applause but soon lost his concentration thanks to Jasprit Bumrah’s persistent length.

Surely, the game was going to finish soon. But Pat Cummins and Paine didn’t deter and fought until the lunch. The former was given out as well off Ravi Ashwin but the review forced the umpire to overturn his decision.

Crazy post-lunch session

The post-lunch session began on a happy note for India as the gritty Paine was dismissed by Bumrah. But India’s nemesis continued to haunt them on this tour as well. Mitchell Starc got stuck into their bowlers playing his shots while Cummins kept defending. The partnership grew confident with every passing over as the duo added 41 runs together to bring the required runs down to two figures.

However, Starc, who was living dangerously by wafting at the away going deliveries, edged one of those off Mohammed Shami as India got one step closer to the victory. Though this wasn’t the end of their frustration. Nathan Lyon came out to show the tourists’ lower-order how to bat. He raced away to 20 by playing brilliant shots to make the vociferous Indian fans nervous to the hilt.

Cummins, meanwhile, had played more than 100 balls and was determined on not giving away his wicket. But Bumrah pace undid all his hard work. He tried to cream the drive the back of a length delivery off the backfoot only to edge it to Virat Kohli in the first slip. However, even this wasn’t the end of all the drama. Josh Hazlewood also resisted for long as Lyon batted brilliantly.

Both of them brought the deficit down to 32 runs as the prospects of the heart-racing thriller started doing the rounds. But that wasn’t the case as India eventually survived the scare. Ravi Ashwin finally induced an edge off Australia’s number 11 and India sealed a historic win.
