Twitter Reactions: Clinical India win Bangalore Test comfortably despite Dimuth Karunaratne's exceptional ton
Chasing 447, Sri Lanka were bundled out for 208 runs in their second innings to lose the series 2-0.
Before the play began on the third day, the writing was on the wall for Sri Lanka in the Bangalore Test against India. They were chasing 447 runs and had nine wickets in hand and the excitement was only around the time the hosts would take to wrap things up on the third day. However, the team from island nation did make an effort to make the Indian bowlers work hard for their wickets.
Unbeaten overnight batters Kusal Mendis and Dimuth Karunaratne resumed on the third morning with a refreshing approach taking the attack to the opposition. Runs came thick and fast for the duo in the first hour and suddenly India had started to look frustrated as they might not have expected such a response from Sri Lanka. Mendis showed his class after a long time while Karunaratne’s knock hardly came as a surprise.
The duo added a brilliant 97 for the second wicket in a very quick time. But once the partnership was broken with Ravi Ashwin’s one of the deliveries going past Mendis and Rishabh Pant affecting a stumping, Sri Lanka went down very soon. Literally, it was all one-way traffic with the Indian bowlers not giving anything away.
Karunaratne smacks a brilliant hundred
The pitch for this Test match was extremely tough with even the Indian batters also finding it difficult to score runs. However, the Sri Lanka skipper Karunaratne was unfazed and even as he lost his partners at regular intervals at the other end, he continued to play his shots. It was the exhibition of some brilliant technique and superb shots in the middle and soon he got to his 14th Test century too off 160-odd balls.
The entire Chinnaswamy stadium and even the Indian players applauded Karunaratne for his exceptional knock. However, his stay was soon ended by Jasprit Bumrah on 107. Meanwhile, it was an absolute harakiri from other Sri Lanka batters at the other end as none of the batters crossed 12. Sri Lanka were eventually bundled out for just 208 runs losing the Test match by a whopping 238 runs.
Ashwin was once again the catalyst with the ball picking up four wickets while Bumrah continued his good job from the first innings snaring three. India have earned all the available points in the World Test Championship (WTC) from this series and will be keen on continuing their run in the longest format.
