The wicket at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot was a killer for the bowlers. A flat deck with absolutely no juice and Sunil Gavaskar during the pitch analysis described it as a belter. Having faced the burnt of chasing a target last time, Kane Williamson who yet again won the toss decided to bat first and post a total. New Zealand brought in Adam Milne and Glenn Philips in the XI and India handed Mohammed Siraj his debut cap.

Both the Kiwi openers who had rather struggled on tour thus far enjoyed the time in the middle against helpless Indian bowlers who aren’t used to being dominated especially in limited overs cricket of late. While Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled the opening over, Siraj partnered him and it was not an ideal start. He spent 10 runs in the first over and things were going to get worse.

Martin Guptill and Colin Munro loved how well the ball came on to the bat and thrashed all the bowlers who came their way. While Guptill was the aggressor at the start Munro soon matched him shot for shot. The Indian spinners who’ve enjoyed such a wonderful time this home season faced the heat. Both Yuzvendra Chahal and Axar Patel didn’t quite get their act together on a surface where the ball just landed on the sweet spot of the ball from the pitch.

Guptill was dismissed caught on 45, while Munro had all the luck in his favour. As many as three catches were dropped by Bhuvneshwar, Shreyas Iyer and Chahal along with a missed run out opportunity. He went on to score his second T20I hundred while the two other Kiwi batters Williamson and Tom Bruce who got the opportunity to bat couldn’t kick in.

Bhuvi and Bumrah finished with decent figures, their economies were 7.25 and 5.75 respectively. Siraj spent 53 runs in his 4 overs and also picked his maiden International wicket. Patel also cost India runs at a rate of 13. Some tight death bowling again helped Team India pull things back towards the end and the Black Caps finished with 196/2.

Here is how Twitterati reacted to the disdainful batting effort from the Kiwis:
