With the series already in the bag, Australia would be hoping to whitewash arch-rivals England by winning the third and final One Day International at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Tuesday, November 22.
However, the Aussies already seemed to be on a mission right from the word ‘go’ when they were put into bat by the visiting captain Jos Buttler. The duo of David Warner and Travis Head laid a solid foundation with a 269-run opening stand.
David Warner-Travis Head make the English bowlers toil hard
In the first ODI, the opening pair of David Warner and Travis Head had stitched a 147-run stand as the Aussies successfully chased down 288 runs by six wickets with over three overs to spare. While Warner scored 86, Head contributed with 69.
Now, both Warner and Head once again took the English bowlers to the cleaners opening the innings, but this time while setting a target for the opposition. On what seemed to be a perfect batting-friendly surface at the MCG, both batters made the English bowlers look clueless as they succeeded in finding the boundaries at regular intervals.
While Travis Head was the star of this gigantic partnership, the focus was completely on David Warner who made some records after his power-packed batting performance.
The southpaw finally managed to end his century drought by registering his first international ton after a huge gap of 1043 days. Meanwhile, the explosive batter also became the fastest Australian to amass 6,000 runs in One Day Internationals.
It took David just 139 innings to reach the 6000-run mark and in the process, he surpassed former destructive batter Matthew Hayden. Hayden had achieved this feat during his 154thinnings in March 2008. Warner breached the three-figure mark off 97 deliveries. He was eventually dismissed in the 39th over after a stupendous knock of 106 runs from 102 balls at a strike rate of almost 104. Travis Head followed soon after scoring a blistering 130-ball 152 at an outstanding strike rate of nearly 117.
Here’s how the netizens heaped praise on Warner-Head’s double-century opening stand:
