Anushka Sharma's namesake goes unsold in WPL auction, fans react

The much-awaited auction of the Women’s Premier League finally got underway on Saturday, December 09 in Mumbai.  A total of 165 players went under the hammer for 30 remaining slots to be filled across five franchises. Several big stars of the cricketing world went unsold such as Chamari Athapaththu, Deandra Dottin, Maia Bouchier and many more.

However, one name which grabbed everyone’s attention was an uncapped Indian player named ‘Anushka Sharma’. As soon as her name came up in the auction, fans expected Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) women to take her in their squad as she shares her name with actor wife of star India batter Virat Kohli. However, the player went unsold which started a memefest on X and fans wrote the most hilarious reactions to the entire incident.

Notably, Anushka, whose base price was INR 10 Lakh, plays for Madhya Pradesh Women in the Indian domestic circuit and is a 20-year-old bowling all-rounder. She also made headlines earlier as her all-round performance helped India B beat India A in the opening match of the Women’s U19 One Day Challenger Trophy in 2021.

The WPL auction was an action-packed affair as it featured two Indian uncapped players going for big bucks. The first one was Vrinda Dinesh who was sold for a whopping INR 1.30 Crore to UP Warriorz. The 22-year-old Vrinda is the opening batter for Karnataka and has been plundering runs for her side for the last two seasons.

Kashvee Gautam was the joint-most expensive player of the WPL 2024 auction

The second one was Kashvee Gautam who was bought for INR 2 Crore by Gujarat Giants. The 20-year-old is a right-arm seamer who can also whack a few at lower down the order for her side.  

Notably, Gautam was the joint most expensive player of the auction along with Annabel Sutherland who was sold for INR 2 Crore to Delhi Capitals.
