Australia tightened their grip in the ongoing Ashes series after a remarkable collapse from the English batters on the third morning of the Lord's Test. England's reckless approach in the first session left the fans and experts bemused as the home side lost six wickets for just the addition of 47 runs.
England's swashbuckling approach with the bat on the second day brought great success to the home team, despite a flurry of wickets in the final session. The Three Lions were hopeful of a strong showing from their influential skipper Ben Stokes and Harry Brook against a handicapped Australian bowling unit.
However, Stokes was completely undone by Mitchell Starc with a beautiful delivery in the very first over of the day, pegging back the home side instantly. Even though Harry Brook compiled a brisk half-century, he was lured into Australia's short-ball ploy, inducing a frustrating reaction from the onlooking Geoffery Boycott.
Australian pacers rattle England with their tactics
Australia's procession in the first hour continued as Jonny Bairstow also succumbed to a reckless shot against Josh Hazlewood. The English tail didn't last too long either, as Travis Head got rid of Ollie Robinson and Stuard Broad in one over before Aussie skipper Pat Cummins ended the English resistance with a well-directed short delivery to Josh Tongue.
England lost six wickets for just 47 runs, a testament to their questionable approach against the Australian quicks. The home side's woeful batting performance saw the Aussie's pouch a considerable first-innings lead of 91 runs despite the absence of the injured Nathan Lyon.
A stream of wickets with the short approach. England continue to be in a Harry. #ashes #ENGvsAUS

Not even the best investors in the financial world put all their eggs in the same basket! What are @englandcricket doing? Duckett, Pope, Root, Brook?@GeoffreyBoycott would never have given his wicket away so cheaply! #Ashes #ENGvAUS

You might’ve not let me back in the changerooms if I had’ve gotten out like that 😅

Really poor leadership. Even when playing this style of cricket there is a time to consolidate.

Love the attacking way of thinking but sometimes you need to earn the right. #TheAshes #TheAshes2023 #ENGvAUS
Bazball is over simplistic and stupidly ruductive requiring England to be lucky in every innings. For Bazball to make any sense the only alternative must be to play slow, boring test cricket which clearly isn't and has never been the case. #Ashes #ENGvAUS #Bazball

England started their innings at the same time yesterday for 20 minutes before Lunch #Ashes #ENGvAUS

That famous England collapse was due to come. Absolutely shocking! Unless we get some kind of miracle, Ashes done and dusted. #Ashes #ENGvAUS

The key to any successful team is knowing WHEN to turn on the aggression or ‘bazball’ approach & when not. And having the ability to do so. England are just charging into another defeat. Kudos to the Aussies though. Seen right through us. #Ashes23 #ashes #ENGvAUS #BBCCricket

Might be overreacting but I think this morning just cost England this game as well as any chance of winning the Ashes. #Ashes23 #ENGvAUS
